Israel opposition urges PM to resign over bribery charges

A statement issued on Sunday says that Netanyahu is suspected of accepting bribes in exchange for policy decisions that favored Shaul Elovitch, a media mogul that controlled Israel's largest telecom firm, Bezeq, and the Walla News website.

"I am certain that the authorized officials, after considering the matters, will reach the same conclusion in this case as well - that there was nothing because there is nothing", Netanyahu further said on Sunday.

Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu should be charged with bribery and fraud, police have said.

Earlier this year, investigators also recommended that Netanyahu be tried for allegedly taking almost $300,000 worth of gifts including expensive cigars and champagne from wealthy friends including Hollywood producer Arnon Milchan and Australian billionaire James Packer.

Talk of early elections has become a staple of Israel's political landscape in recent months, but polls have shown the cascade of allegations against Netanyahu wouldn't cost him a fifth term.

Journalists who previously worked for Walla have confirmed that they were pressured into exclusively covering Netanyahu in a positive light.

The police also recommended that charges of fraud and breach of trust be brought against Netanyahu and his wife.

Israel's attorney general Avichai Mandelblit will make the final decision as to whether to indict the prime minister.

Netanyahu last month was almost forced to call elections after a key partner withdrew from his coalition to protest a cease-fire with the Hamas militant group in Gaza.

"These recommendations were determined and leaked even before the investigations began", he said. "Only recently, police recommendations in cases against other public figures were rejected by the relevant authorities".

Israel must hold its next election by November 2019.

The Bezeq case, known as Case 4000, is the most serious of all those of which Netanyahu has been accused. Hefetz was the third confidant of the prime minister to become a witness in various cases, joining former communications ministry director general Shlomo Filber and former chief of staff Ari Harow. But Netanyahu may want to seek a renewed mandate from the people, forcing a prosecutor to think twice before indicting him.

Two senior advisers have turned state witnesses and have allegedly provided authorities with incriminating evidence.

The police's recommendation has triggered calls for Netanyahu to resign immediately.

Mr Netanyahu held the government's communications portfolio until previous year and oversaw regulation in the field.
