Mueller: Manafort Breached Plea Deal By Lying Again

Donald Trump's former campaign chairman Paul Manafort lied repeatedly to authorities after striking a plea deal with prosecutors and pledging to cooperate, exposing him to a potentially lengthy prison term, U.S. Special Counsel Robert Mueller said.

Paul Manafort has "breached" his plea agreement with the Justice Department by lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and special counsel Robert Mueller's office two months after he started to cooperate in the Russian Federation probe, prosecutors alleged Monday.

Manafort was already convicted of eight felony charges of financial wrongdoing in a separate case in Virginia, where he is scheduled to be sentenced February 8.

Faced with a second trial in the District of Columbia on related charges in September, he pleaded guilty to two conspiracy counts and agreed to an open-ended arrangement requiring him to answer "fully, truthfully, completely and forthrightly" questions about "any and all matters" of interest to the government.

The former Trump campaign chairman has met prosecutors at least nine times, amounting to hours of discussions about what he knows.

He has been held in a Virginia jail since June.

Prosecutors indicated in Monday's filing that they will soon file a "detailed sentencing submission" that will lay out the nature of Manafort's alleged "crimes and lies", including those that occurred after he signed a plea deal.

But under the terms of the agreement, Manafort, 69, can not withdraw his guilty plea. Trump has hinted that he might pardon aides who remain loyal to the White House. Manafort had hoped that in agreeing to cooperate with Mr. Mueller's team, prosecutors would argue that he deserved a lighter punishment. Remember. Paul Manafort pleaded guilty to two conspiracy charges in September, just a day before the jury was supposed to be selected for his trial in Washington, D.C. And as part of that process, Manafort agreed to full, voluntary and truthful cooperation with prosecutors.

Trump’s ex-campaign chief Paul Manafort LIED to FBI after guilty plea, claims Mueller

"At some point, Manafort will be sentenced, and at that point there will be a prolonged hearing where there will be witnesses called and information revealed and we will learn that information", Cevallos said.

Before he worked on Trump's campaign for several months in mid-2016, at a critical juncture in the run-up to the November election, Manafort made tens of millions of dollars working for the party of former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych, who was ousted by pro-Western street protests in 2014.

His long-standing relationship with an oligarch close to Russian President Vladimir Putin was another reason Manafort's cooperation was seen as important to Mueller's probe.

The server reference relates to the Democratic National Committee, whose emails were hacked in a cyberattack believed to be an attempt by Russian Federation to influence the outcome of the 2016 election.

Trump says that when the Mueller investigation ends it will become evident that people were treated "horribly" and "viciously" and that people's lives are being ruined for refusing to lie.

"We discuss things that are appropriate", Giuliani said. He also faces an additional 10 years in the Virginia case.

Trump believes the FBI should have seized the DNC's server as part of its investigation, despite the fact that investigators do not need it to obtain the information they need.
