Border Patrol Chief Defends Tear Gas: Agents Under Attack

Footage of US border agents forcing migrants back from the border has had mixed reactions that have fallen along recent political lines. "It is certainly out of date, it does not meet our requirement for what we need with a wall".

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers walks along a wall at the border between Mexico and the United States, as seen from San Diego on Sunday, Nov. 25, 2018.

USA officials reopened the crossing at the San Ysidro port of entry between the U.S. city of San Diego and the Mexican city of Tijuana on Sunday after closing it for several hours. It is the most heavily trafficked land border in the western hemisphere. Mexico's Milenio TV showed images of migrants climbing over fences and peeling back metal sheeting to enter.

San Diego Sector Chief Patrol Agent Rodney Scott told CNN Monday morning that the 42 people, mostly men, were arrested Sunday on the US side of the border.

Some 7,400 of the migrants are now gathered in the Mexican border state of Baja California, in the cities of Tijuana and Mexicali, and tensions had been rising in recent days amid a series of daily protests.

The official said Monday about 50 migrants have been detained after they crossed the border near San Ysidro, Calif., on Sunday.

White House spokeswoman Lindsay Walters said Trump used the process previous administrations followed to select his nominees. At one point in the award ceremony, while Trump was recognizing Miriam Adelson, he looked for Sheldon in the audience.

After the clashes in Tijuana over the weekend, freelance reporter David Agren noted, "These difficulties in Tijuana were predictable weeks ago, but the caravan pushed onward to the border anyway-and those accompanying it discouraged migrants from accepting Mexican offers to temporary work visas or asylum". A young woman fell to the ground unconscious, and two babies cried, tears streaming from the gas.

Or that Mexico's Interior Ministry said around 500 migrants tried to "violently" enter the USA, the Associated Press reported, adding that it would immediately deport those people and would reinforce security. The Ministry of Interior said the main caravan has 8,247 people, with 7,417 of those located in Tijuana or nearby Mexicali. Arriving at the border, some chanted, "We are not criminals!"

The group were stopped by a chain-link fence topped with barbed wire and repelled by US Border Patrol agents firing tear gas shells and rubber bullets, an AFP journalist on the scene saw.

Hundreds of migrants tried to gather and apply for asylum in the United States - mostly Honduran migrants were fleeing poverty and violence, who were told to wait in Tijuana until they could request asylum. Many hope to apply for asylum in the US, but agents at the San Ysidro entry point are processing fewer than 100 asylum petitions a day.

The Trump administration views this situation as unacceptable, and President Trump dispatched military forces to bolster the border ahead of the caravan's arrival. The incident began with a march to the border that organizers said would be peaceful.

Mexico is on track to send a total of around 100,000 Central Americans back home by the end of this year.
