White House threatens to suspend CNN reporter's press pass again

White House threatens to suspend CNN reporter's press pass again

But just hours after that ruling was handed down, Acosta says he received a letter from the White House, announcing their intentions not to renew his press pass when the court order expires at the end of the month.

President Donald Trump watches as a White House aide reaches to take away a microphone from CNN journalist Jim Acosta during a news conference in the East Room of the White House in Washington.

CNN's lawyers now say that the White House letter is an "attempt to provide retroactive due process".

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders, in an interview Friday on Fox News' "Hannity", told her father, former Arkansas GOP Gov. Mike Huckabee, a letter had been sent to CNN, and it is "frankly laughable" the network claims its access has been hindered.

As it stands, Acosta is guaranteed use of his press pass to the White House through the end of the month.

In his closing remarks, Kelly made clear that the ruling, which is only the beginning of the court proceedings to decide Acosta's White House access, was narrow and didn't determine whether or not Acosta's First Amendment right was violated.

If the White House were to seek again to pull the hard pass, it would have required the administration to first ask a federal judge to lift a court order.

How Meghan Markle's Family Drama Helped Her Win Over the Royals
At the time, the former Suits star had just become engaged to Prince Harry , and wouldn't tie the knot for another five months. After Meghan married Prince Harry there was a backlash from her family although Doria did attend the wedding without any fuss.

On a trip to California Saturday, the president emphasized that journalists have to treat the White House with respect, in answering questions about Acosta's situation.

The White House opposed the request for an emergency hearing, writing in response to the court: "Not only is there no "emergency" right now, it is impossible to know at this point whether next steps are necessary, much less what those steps should be". "More fundamentally, though, it is further evidence of your clients' animus towards Mr. Acosta based on his work as CNN's chief White House correspondent".

One of the reasons the judge reinstated the press pass is because the White House didn't seem to give an explanation for their decision or offer due process.

President Trump said on Fox News on Sunday that the White House plans to deal harshly with Acosta if he "misbehaves" again.

"You asked a question and the president answered it", the letter said.

The White House argues that Acosta did not follow "basic standards" when he clashed with United States President Donald Trump at a news conference. Acosta then refused to pass the microphone to a female White House aide and there was brief contact between the two. Trump later called Acosta's behaviour distracting and disrespectful.
