Trump to donor's wife with Presidential Medal of Freedom

As Trump heaped praise on Scalia as a champion of original intent during his time on the Supreme Court, the president listed all nine of the Justice's children, and he eventually said this as he turned to Scalia's widow: Maureen McCarthy.

Trump said Scalia transformed the American "legal landscape" and credited him with preserving the originalist view of the Constitution. "I wanted to hear the rest of the song, I don't know why the cut it so short".

At one point in the award ceremony, while Trump was recognizing Miriam Adelson, he looked for Sheldon in the audience.

"As mayor of the birthplace of Elvis Presley, it is my great honor to accept an invitation to the White House for the posthumous awarding of the Presidential Medal of Freedom to Elvis Presley", Shelton said.

Former US Supreme Court justice Antonin Scalia, who died in 2016 and was replaced by a Trump nominee, also received the award, along with Orrin Hatch, a conservative senator who is retiring in two months after a 41-year career.

The living recipients included Miriam Adelson, who, like her casino tycoon husband Sheldon Adelson, is a heavyweight Republican party donor.

Some questioned Trump's decision to recognize Miriam Adelson so soon after the November 6 election. Wow, ' the president said, causing those in the room to chuckle.

White House spokeswoman Lindsay Walters said Trump used the process previous administrations followed to select his nominees.

The Medal of Freedom is given to people who have made significant contributions to the United States' national interests and security, to world peace, or to cultural or other significant public or private endeavors.

The Presidential Medal of Freedom is the nation's highest civilian honor.

Reacting to the award Mrs Adelson told reporters she was "deeply humbled and moved by this exceptional honour".
