Trump leaves World War I commemorations isolated among allies

US President Donald Trump discussed a host of issues - including Syria, trade, the situation in Saudi Arabia, sanctions, Afghanistan, China and North Korea - during his meetings with the world leaders in France, the White House said.

He did so again during Sunday's remembrance ceremony in Paris to mark the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I.

Trump, who has pursued "America First" policies since entering the White House and in the run-up to the congressional elections this month declared himself a "nationalist", sat still and stony-faced in the front row as Macron spoke.

Trump had snubbed the Peace Forum, instead visiting a military cemetery in the Paris suburbs, a day after coming under heavy fire for cancelling a similar trip due to rain. The feminist activist group Femen later claimed responsibility.

It came a day after Macron and Trump said they'd patched up differences over a twitter tussle, even as the showy friendliness of their past encounters was replaced by a stiffer interaction.

The weekend exposed tensions with US allies in Europe over Trump's decision to pull out of the 1987 Intermediate-range Nuclear Forces Treaty with Russian Federation, which has kept the continent free of theater-range nuclear missiles for more than 30 years.

"The aim of the forum is to show that there are lots of forces in the global system - states, NGOs, foundations, intellectuals, companies - who believe we need a world of rules, an open world and a multilateral world", he said. "You know what the word is?"

UPSTAGED: Russian President Vladimir Putin was the last to arrive at the Arc de Triomphee.

The plane barrelled through a chain-link fence before finally coming to a halt at the top of an embankment, Bedessee said. The runway then was 7,400 feet (2,255 meters) but is now being extended to 10,000 feet.

"I want to speak of my concerns that are mixed in with today's commemoration, the concern that national blinders are spreading again, that actions are taken as if to simply ignore our mutual dependencies, relationships and binding ties, " Merkel said. You have globalists. I also love the world and I don't mind helping the world, but we have to straighten out our country first.

Russian officials said the French had been the ones to ask that no separate Trump-Putin meeting be arranged Sunday in order not to distract from the solemn commemorations.

But Trump did not broach the divide as he paid tribute Sunday to US and allied soldiers killed in World War I during "a awful, terrible war" that marked America's emergence as a world power. Afterward he flew back to Washington.

"President Macron of France has just suggested that Europe build its own military in order to protect itself from the U.S., China and Russian Federation".

The earlier show of unity among some of the world leaders at the Arc de Triomphe comes at a time of growing tensions between liberals and populists in the European Union, as well as between Europe and the U.S., two years into Mr Trump's "America First" presidency.

On Sunday afternoon Mr Macron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel attended a peace conference - the Paris Peace Forum - with leaders including Mr Putin and Turkey's Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

On a weekend meant to commemorate world war veterans, U.S. President Donald Trump's moniker as a self-declared nationalist garnered global attention on the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I.
