Can Trump block the Mueller probe?

President Donald Trump is calling acting Attorney General Matt Whitaker "a very highly respected man" as he faces criticism about his appointment to replace Jeff Sessions.

Whitaker was tapped by the White House to serve as Sessions' chief of staff in September 2017, with sources describing then-White House counsel Don McGahn as the person behind the hiring.

Trump appointed Matthew Whitaker as acting attorney general.

"I want my son to know that it's not ok to have a criminal president that's not being prosecuted correctly under the law", one protester said in Times Square.

Lockett braved the cold Thursday night at Cal Anderson Park on Capitol Hill, where Governor Jay Inslee, King County Executive Dow Constantine, and U.S. Rep. Pramila Jayapal spoke.

Noting that the special counsel's budget falls within the attorney general's purview, Whitaker said he could envision a situation in which Sessions was replaced as attorney general and replaced by a new boss who doesn't fire Mueller but "just reduces his budget to so low that his investigation grinds to nearly a halt".

Russian Federation has denied interfering, and Trump has repeatedly said there was no collusion between his campaign and Moscow.

Those included an op-ed article in which he said Mueller would be straying outside his mandate if he investigated Trump family finances and a radio interview in which he maintained there was no evidence of collusion between the Kremlin and the Trump campaign.

Some of these powers include whether to subpoena Trump, approve the criminal charges of individuals indicted in the investigation in the future and whether Mueller's final report is released to the public, and if so, what portions are redacted.

Notorious mob boss James "Whitey" Bulger was killed Tuesday inside a West Virginia federal prison , according to various reports. The ex-crime boss was on the run for years and was one of the FBI's most wanted before being captured in Santa Monica in 2011.

Mueller was named special counsel by Rosenstein after Sessions recused himself from the probe.

In a statement Thursday, the Republican said Whitaker is a "steady hand that will provide good leadership and judgment, and will ensure that the United States Department of Justice upholds the highest standards of the rule of law".

Of the scrutiny Whitaker is facing, Trump said: "It's a shame that no matter who I put in they go after".

Mueller's probe looks to establish whether Trump or his campaign actively colluded with them to steal the White House.

McConnell, who sets the Senate's agenda, reiterated that legislation to protect Mueller from firing is unnecessary.

Wednesday's developments signaled to these organizations that a red line - that this move by the president was an attempt to undermine Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election.

When posting the joint letter on Twitter, Maura Healey, Attorney General of MA, said that Whitaker's "hostility to the Special Councel's investigation disqualifies him from overseeing Robort Muller".

"We thank Attorney General Jeff Sessions for his service, and wish him well!"

With the midterms over, Special Counsel Robert Mueller is believed to be preparing fresh indictments against Trump campaign figures, possibly including his son Donald Trump Jr. and a former campaign consultant Roger Stone, and could press for the president himself to answer questions.
