Boeing issues operational update to 737 operators after Lion Air crash

Boeing issues operational update to 737 operators after Lion Air crash

Indonesia's National Transportation Safety Committee said it had agreed with Boeing on procedures that the airplane manufacturer should distribute globally on how flight crews can deal with "angle of attack" sensor problems following the October 29 crash that killed all 189 people on board.

In a statement on Tuesday, the airline manufacturer said it had issued an "Operations Manual Bulletin" advising airline operators how to address erroneous cockpit readings.

Meanwhile, authorities have extended their search as they collect more body parts and shattered debris from the spot where the plane crashed during a routine one-hour flight from Jakarta to Pangkal Pinang.

On Monday, November 5, Indonesian officials arranged for a meeting between the families of the victims of downed Lion Air flight JT-610 as well as the search and rescue officials investigating the accident.

When contacted by FOX Business, Boeing declined to comment on the report.

The Lion Air plane that crashed into the ocean last week had been experiencing a "technical problem" with its airspeed indicator and that the gauge had malfunctioned on the jet's final four flights, investigators said Monday.

Indonesia has not formally requested fleet-wide checks on 737 MAX jets and none are planned pending more data, a person familiar with matter said, on condition of anonymity.

Representatives of 737 MAX operators, Singapore Airlines Ltd (SIAL.SI) offshoot SilkAir, Garuda Indonesia (GIAA.JK) and Canada's WestJet Ltd (WJA.TO), said they had not yet received a bulletin from Boeing.

The year before, the U.S. Air Force said moisture in sensors caused the 2008 crash of a B-2 stealth bomber on Guam; both pilots ejected safely.

Indonesian investigators said Wednesday the plane had experienced instrument failures on four flights, including on one journey where both the AOA sensor and the airspeed indicator were affected.

The agency said it would probe what caused the indicator problem and whether proper repairs were done - including replacing the faulty component, he added.

When these sensors break down, the plane can go into what's known as "aerodynamic stall", a status in which its wings can't produce enough lift and the aircraft starts to dive.

There are more than 200 Boeing Max jets around the world, with orders for more than 4,700, according to Boeing's website.

"We are formulating, with NTSB and Boeing, detailed inspections regarding the airspeed indicator", he said, according to Reuters.

Tracking company FlightRadar24 checked the records for that flight - JT43, which landed safely in Jakarta - and found irregularities in speed and elevation in the first 11 minutes in the air.

Search teams combing the wreckage of JT610 have filled 186 body bags with remains, but only 44 victims have been identified so far.

Recovery efforts are looking for the other "black box", the cockpit voice recorder, as investigators analyze the flight data recorder found last week.
