Ethnic Tamil party pledges vote against Sri Lankan strongman

This is disgraceful in that the government of Prime Minister Wickremesinghe has fought to preserve one of Asia's oldest democratic systems, to hold the rule of law, and to fight against corruption. During this meeting, the President apprised the United Nations representative regarding the prevailing political situation in Sri Lanka. He argues that he can not legally be removed until he loses the support of Parliament.

03 de noviembre de 2018, 02:20Colombo, Nov 3 (Prensa Latina) Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena agreed to convene the Legislature on November 7, in a turn to the political crisis in the country, after Mahinda Rajapaksa replaced Ranil Wickremesinghe as the prime minister. His party, UNP, received only 34% compared to the 48% of the votes received by the party led by the former President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

The minority Sri Lanka Muslim Congress party, which has seven lawmakers, said its members had also rejected offers to join the Sirisena-Rajapakse camp.

In a national address on the following Sunday, Sirisena explained that he sacked Wickremesinghe mainly because of the alleged involvement of a Cabinet minister in a plot to assassinate him.

But none of the players appealed and accepted their mistake. "Players feel that they are treated as commodities", it notes.

An island nation with an economy that's mainly reliant on tourism and tea exports, Sri Lanka's blessed geography puts it at a crucial juncture of the busy shipping lanes of the Indian Ocean. While India has enjoyed the status of being Sri Lanka's main economic partner for most part of its independent history and shares strong cultural and historical bonds, China is fast catching up and even overtook New Delhi as Colombo's largest trading partner in 2017.

Sirisena summoned Parliament to meet on Nov 5, as against Nov 16 planned earlier, as pressure grows to resolve the turmoil. Thousands of Sri Lankans also protested in the capital in the past week demanding Sirisena immediately convene Parliament. Jayasuriya, in a meeting with political party legislators, said President Sirisena had in a telephone conversation informed him that parliament would convene on November 7 and a gazette notification would be issued either Friday or Saturday.

Parliament speaker Karu Jayasuriya has called a meeting for next Wednesday.
