Mystery of sisters found tied together in Hudson River

Mystery of sisters found tied together in Hudson River

NYPD Chief of Detectives Dermot Shea said Wednesday that detectives have been in Virginia conducting interviews with members of the immediate family to shed light on "what was going on in the two young ladies' lives".

Investigators are struggling to piece together the mystery of how two sisters from Saudi Arabia who lived in Virginia ended up dead with their feet and waists tied together on a riverbank in NY.

"We also have the sources that the detectives have developed from this investigation thus far; statements made that they would rather inflict harm on themselves and commit suicide than return to Saudi Arabia", Shea said.

Police say the sisters arrived in New York City on 1 September and "maxed out" their credit cards by ordering meals, shopping and staying at upscale hotels.

Tala had again been reported missing by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children in August.

The sisters, originally from Saudi Arabia, were found clothed in fur trim coats and bound together with duct tape.

One theory had been that the sisters had jumped from the George Washington Bridge, but that was ruled out after the medical examiners' office said there were no obvious signs of trauma on the bodies.

New information has emerged about the two sisters who were found taped together on the shore of the Hudson River.

Despite initial reports that the sisters were bound together, Shea said he would describe the tape as "not binding them together, but keeping them together".

The baffling case took on an added air of mystery when it was revealed that the sisters' mother told police that she had received a phone call from the Saudi Arabian embassy in Washington DC the day before the sisters were found. "It is entirely credible that the girls entered the water alive".

They were also seen several times on security cameras in apparently good health, police said during a news conference on Friday afternoon. However, their cause of death has not been determined.

They were reported missing and placed in a shelter after they were located due to abuse allegations.

A spokesperson for the institute called the news of her death "tragic", and said the university was cooperating with police.

Officials from the Department of Homeland Security declined to comment and referred questions to the NY police.

It was previously reported that the girls left their family home in Virginia after suffering abuse. "We're out to get justice for those two girls".

The man said that he was exercising in Riverside Park when he saw two people believed to be the sisters sitting about 30ft (9m) apart near the waterfront.
