Senators view Federal Bureau of Investigation report on Kavanaugh

Confidence grew among President Donald Trump's fellow Republicans on Thursday that Brett Kavanaugh would win Senate confirmation to the U.S. Supreme Court, after positive comments from two wavering lawmakers about an Federal Bureau of Investigation report on accusations of sexual misconduct by the judge.

The Senate Judiciary Committee has received the reports and will start reading the reports Thursday morning.

Ford testified before Congress last week that Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her when they were both in high school.

Two of the five swing-vote senators on the Kavanaugh nomination - Susan Collins of ME and Jeff Flake of Arizona - both now appear satisfied with the FBI investigation, calling it "very thorough", and more importantly, saying they've seen no new corroborating information within it, while top Democrats are criticizing the report as "incomplete" and "very limited".

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has set Friday for the vote on whether the Senate agrees to hold a final confirmation vote as soon as Saturday. If she opposes Kavanaugh, she risks alienating conservative voters who support him.

In July, there was a 10-point gap between the number of Democrats and Republicans who said the midterm election was 'very important'.

On Wednesday, at the Atlantic Festival, Graham was likewise snippy with the audience after they booed him for saying that Kavanaugh was treated "like crap" by Senate Democrats during Judiciary Committee hearings, telling the people in the crowd "oh boo yourself".

The FBI reportedly focused on the sexual assault described by Ford and another incident described by former Yale classmate Deborah Ramirez, who has said Kavanaugh exposed himself during a drinking party and thrust his genitals in her face.

Joseph Shine's petition challenged Section 497 IPC and Section 198 of CrPC, on the grounds that it is discriminatory against men. Further, the law does not take into account cases where the husband has sexual relations with an unmarried woman.

The FBI similarly had not - at least as of Wednesday - interviewed Julie Swetnick, who said in a declaration that Kavanaugh was physically abusive toward girls in high school and was present at a house party in 1982 where she says she was the victim of a "gang" rape. "This investigation found no hint of misconduct", he said.

Harcourt said they signed out of concern about a rush to judgment, in the belief that for the Senate to elevate Kavanaugh "without full information and deliberation to the Supreme Court would undermine the respect owed" to the institution.

The scope of the investigation has become the latest political battle in the larger war over Kavanaugh and the Supreme Court. Hours later, Flake made a decision that forced an FBI investigation into Ford's allegations before moving forward with a Senate vote. Shah said senators - both Republican and Democratic - will have ample time to review the report before the Friday vote. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., said on NBC's Today show that the remarks were "kind of appalling". Agreement by a majority of the 100 senators would advance Kavanaugh's nomination.

US Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) walks to a room to read the report on the FBI investigation into Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC on October 4, 2018. "I had one beer - that's the only thing I remember", he stated inaccurately.

In an interview, No. 2 Senate Democratic leader Dick Durbin of IL said McConnell was "hell-bent on getting this done" this week.

Collins denounced the president's comments as "just plain wrong" while Murkowski called Trump's speech "wholly inappropriate" and "unacceptable". The chamber is sharply divided so Republicans need as much support as they can get, but it isn't yet clear how many senators will vote for Kavanaugh. The FBI also talked to two other friends of Kavanaugh's who were listed as attending a gathering during the same summer that Ford alleged she was assaulted: Chris Garrett, who went out with Ford for a time, and Tim Gaudette.

Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin, who represents the red state of West Virginia, is the lone hold out.

"We have differing views about the other qualifications of Judge Kavanaugh".
