Iran Threatens U.S. Over Deadly Separatist Attack On Parade

The attack killed at least 29 people, including two of the militants.

Iranian women hold images of one of the victims during a public funeral ceremony for those killed during an attack on a military parade on the weekend, in the southwestern Iranian city of Ahvaz on September 24, 2018.

President Hassan Rouhani said yesterday Iran was ready to confront the U.S. and its Gulf Arab allies, a day after an attack on an Iranian military parade killed 29 people, including children and 12 members of the elite Revolutionary Guards.

"Based on reports, this cowardly act was done by people who the Americans come to help when they are trapped in Syria and Iraq, and are paid by Saudi Arabia and the UAE", Khamenei said on his website.

Isil's official news agency, Amaq, released a video purporting to show three of the four gunmen shortly before the attack.

But Nikki Haley, the USA ambassador to the United Nations, said Iran should "look in the mirror" for the causes of the attack and that Rouhani had "oppressed his people for a long time".

Hossein Salami, deputy head of Iran's Revolutionary Guards, blasted the U.S., promising "devastating" revenge.

'It is not acceptable that the European Union does not blacklist members of these terrorist groups as long as they do not perpetrate a crime on the European soil, ' Qasemi is quoted as saying by Iranian state news agency INRA.

Mourners carried pictures of the dead along with banners reading "we will stand to the end" and "no to terrorism".

Thousands of people packed the streets in the south-western city of Ahvaz on Monday to mourn the victims of the attack.

Responding to Rohani's accusations, the US ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley, told the BBC that Iran should "look in the mirror" for the causes of the attack, saying that Iran had "oppressed its people for a long time".

President Donald Trump himself often offers quick responses on Twitter to suspected terrorist attacks, especially those that appear to have been perpetrated by the Islamic State extremist group.

Nikki Haley, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, rejected Iran's accusations. Iranian President Hassan Rouhani on Sunday pointed blame at Arab separatists for the deadly attack and accused an unnamed US-backed Gulf state of supporting them.

On June 7, 2017 in Tehran, 17 people were killed and dozens wounded in simultaneous attacks on the parliament and on the tomb of revolutionary leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini - the first inside Iran claimed by IS.

It is, however, highly unlikely the Guards will strike any of its foes directly and risk setting off a regional conflict.

He did not give any further details on the identity of those behind the "terrorist attack".

Both Trump and Rouhani are attending this week's U.N. General Assembly in NY.

Giuliani has made similar comments before on Iran and the State Department has said he does not speak for the administration.

Iran is at odds with Western-allied Gulf country Saudi Arabia for predominance in the Middle East.
