Trump Urged Spain to Build Wall Across Sahara

Spanish Foreign Minister Josep Borrell claims that US President Donald Trump suggested Spain should build a wall across the Sahara desert to deal with the issue of migration from Africa.

According to the Spanish foreign minister, Trump, asked if he was aware of the size of the Sahara, replied: "It can't be bigger than our border with Mexico".

The wall was one of Mr Trump's dominant campaign promises, but few believe building it along 2,000 miles of the USA border is realistic or feasible.

Borrell mentioned Trump's Saharan solution - in which Spain and other European countries would apparently have to construct the barrier on foreign soil - during a lunch in Madrid organized by the cultural association Club Siglo XXI.

The world's biggest desert stretches 3,000 miles across several worldwide borders in North Africa - including the Morocco/Algeria border.

The conversation between the two politicians is believed to have taken place when Mr Borrell visited the States with the king and queen of Spain in June.

Since January of this year, 35,000 migrants arrived in Spain, the highest number received by any European Union country.

Spain has seen over 30,000 migrants and refugees arrive by sea so far in 2018, making it the top destination for migrants arriving via the Mediterranean.

Trump's pledge to build a wall across the 3,000-kilometre US-Mexico border became a central focus of the 2016 presidential campaign. Shanksville. And I was there. "And it's sort of lovely, what they did is incredible", Trump told Hill.TV in an interview on Tuesday.

"They have a series of walls, I'm saying, it's like flawless".

Trump's plan for a border wall along the US-Mexico border has encountered many obstacles in US Congress.
