McConnell Slams Democrats for Timing of Sexual Assault Allegation Against Kavanaugh

Wisconsin's US senators agreed Monday that both Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh and the woman accusing him of a decades-old sexual assault should testify before a Senate committee.

Kavanaugh, meanwhile, was seen arriving at the White House late Monday morning.

This does not mean I consider sexual assault "excusable" or "minor".

The GOP-controlled Senate Judiciary Committee appears nonetheless committed to a vote later this week despite calls by Democrats to postpone the vote.

The Post published previously unknown details from Ford, who alleges that a "stumbling drunk" Kavanaugh pinned her down and groped her at a high-school party in the 1980s while his friend watched. The Senate Judiciary Committee has invited him and Ford to testify at a hearing Monday, although Ford's lawyers say she wants the FBI to investigate her allegation before she testifies. "I am willing to talk to the Senate Judiciary Committee in any way the committee deems appropriate to refute this false allegation, from 36 years ago, and defend my integrity".

Three red-state Democrats, Sens. In both cases, the allegations became public only after the nominees went through their initial confirmation hearings.

"This woman should not be insulted and she should not be ignored", Conway told Fox News. "Flake that we should delay this week's vote", Feinstein said. So two Republican votes against Kavanaugh's confirmation would derail it.

The White House indicated Monday that it is continuing to stand by Kavanaugh but that it expects Ford will offer testimony to the Judiciary Committee. And in an unusually personal swipe, Schumer said McConnell was showing "unmitigated gall" to oppose delaying Kavanaugh's nomination after refusing for most of 2016 to consider President Barack Obama's nomination of Merrick Garland to the court after Antonin Scalia died.

Yet a few Republicans have suggested there may have to be a delay, at least in the Judiciary vote on the nominee - which was scheduled for this Thursday - in order to hear from Ford. She also apparently recently passed a polygraph test about her allegation, which seems to prove for sure that she believes that this really did happen.

Before Ford had come forward, he said, "So far, the claims against Kavanaugh are _still_ a terrible dirty trick".

There is no evidence, other than maybe her husband's vague recollection, that she ever told the therapist in 2012 that her attacker was Brett Kavanaugh. White House counselor Kellyanne Conway appeared to set the tone across multiple morning shows on Monday when she pushed for Ford to be allowed to testify before lawmakers.

"The chain of custody of this letter runs through the Democratic side of the Judiciary Committee".

Ford came forward to the Post on Sunday, attaching her name to the anonymous allegation.

"This is a remarkable moment with echoes of the past, but also stark differences", said Nan Aaron, the founder and president of the Alliance for Justice, a liberal judicial advocacy group, "I can tell you, every woman in America will be watching how this unfolds".

Underscoring the uncertainty Kavanaugh faces, three senators considered swing votes on the nomination issued statements Monday calling for a thorough review of the allegations by Ford, a professor in California.

"There's a difference between making a mistake and having it be your character", says Cleta Mitchell, a Republican election attorney based in Washington, D.C., and a supporter of Kavanaugh.

Judge also denied the allegation in an interview with The Weekly Standard on Friday. By the time he testified in a second round of hearings, following Hill, he said, "From my standpoint, as a black American, as far as I'm concerned, it is a high-tech lynching for uppity blacks who in any way deign to think for themselves, to do for themselves, to have different ideas".

Leahy said in a statement that the "integrity of our nation's highest court is on the line" and "we can not brush aside these extraordinarily serious allegations in an unseemly rush to confirm Judge Kavanaugh to a lifetime seat".
