Brett Kavanaugh: Donald Trump doubts sex assault allegations against Supreme Court nominee

The cause of McConnell's ire was the late-breaking allegation from Christine Blasey Ford, a research psychologist, that Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her when they were teenagers, a charge that threatens to upend a confirmation which seemed assured just days ago.

Sen. Doug Jones of Alabama said Wednesday that "it's unreasonable" for the Senate Judiciary Committee to "force her hand without doing the appropriate investigation".

Kavanaugh has denied the accusation.

Grassley said the committee offered Ford "the opportunity to share her story" in a public or a private hearing, or staff interviews, "whichever makes her most comfortable".

He has also cast fresh doubt on whether the alleged attack even happened.

"But I can only say this: he's such an outstanding man - very hard for me to imagine that anything happened", Trump said.

He said Wednesday it would be "very interesting". That this fearless woman is receiving death threats and has been forced to flee with her family is appalling and heartbreaking.

While the president supports the notion of delaying the hearings so that all sides can be heard in the matter, he is dismissing calls for the FBI to investigate the assault allegations.

On Monday, Republicans abruptly agreed to hold a public hearing on Ford's accusation under pressure from senators demanding that the nominee and his accuser give public, sworn testimony before any vote. By margins of as much as 20 points, women are less favorable than men to President Trump and more inclined to say they favor Democrats in the November 6th congressional elections.

Ford's attorneys said in the letter that they wanted an FBI investigation of the incident before she testifies in front of the committee in Washington.

One million asked to evacuate as Hurricane Florence closes in
Hurricanes need the warm waters of the ocean to survive, and as soon as they go over land, they lose that sustaining energy. All signs pointed to a stronger, slower, wider and wetter hurricane in the days ahead, forecasters said.

Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., accused Democrats of using their calls for an FBI investigation as a ploy. "I have, however, referred the matter to federal investigative authorities", Feinstein said.

"If she shows up, that would be wonderful".

But, she added, "Really, guess who's perpetuating all of these kinds of actions?"

The campaign's creator, Heidi Feldman, tells me that she's been in touch with Ford's representatives, and that they're "very appreciative" of the assistance. That underscores a desire to avoid antagonizing female voters at a time when the #MeToo movement has made sexual abuse a major political dynamic.

The woman who accuses US Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh of attempting to rape her will not testify to the Senate next week, says her lawyer. Some could even call a presidential order for the FBI to investigate a state-law matter to be an abuse of power. "But now, at the 11th hour, with committee votes on the schedule, after Democrats have spent weeks and weeks searching for any possible reason that the nomination should be delayed-now they choose to introduce this allegation". Chuck Grassley (R-IA).

The Senate, the committee chairman notes, "and only the Senate", is tasked with vetting a president's Supreme Court nominee.

No. 2 Senate Republican leader John Cornyn of Texas was one of the few Republicans who openly questioned Ford's version of events.

In an interview with Politico Magazine, Hirono revealed that the Democrats have a mind to keep the empty Supreme Court seat vacant for two years, when they can hopefully get a Democrat in the White House.

Hill's allegation Clarence Thomas sexually harassed her — and the committee's handling of his confirmation hearings — haunts Washington as a key event that alienated many women.

September 23, 1991: Biden says in a statement reported in the Times that this is the date on which Hill agreed to allow the FBI to investigate the allegations.
