Democrats Ramp Up Attacks on Kavanaugh's Honesty After Hearings

Booker is one of several top names in his party who could move to win the Democratic nomination and seek to defeat President Donald Trump's bid for a second term.

The Senate Judiciary Committee is scheduled to vote on Kavanaugh this week, though Democrats may try to delay that vote. Between 2001 and 2003, he stole confidential letters, notes and talking points written by Democrats about Bush's prospective judicial nominees, giving them to Republicans so those nominees could prepare for questions raised during their confirmation hearings.

The hearings were marked by loud protests and partisan battles.

Some liberals have expressed concern Kavanaugh could be a rubber stamp for Trump and protect him from lawsuits and investigations. Murkowski, who also supports abortion rights, is reviewing Kavanaugh and won't announce her vote before his nomination goes to the Senate floor. "I'm an independent judge".

"After careful consideration of his record and reviewing the limited documents made available to the U.S. Senate, I have come to the conclusion that I can not support Judge Kavanaugh's nomination to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court", she said in a statement.

"I am also deeply troubled by Judge Kavanaugh's views on executive power". During both hearings, Kavanaugh said he learned about Miranda's action only from news reports, and Leahy did not have access to Kavanaugh's emails.

Democratic senators kept the heat on Judge Brett Kavanaugh on the third day of his Senate confirmation hearings, asking pointed questions about his leanings on women's rights, racial profiling, and the potential role he could play if a case related to the Russian Federation investigation reaches the Supreme Court.

Lachance said Kavanaugh's record on environmental protections is worrisome.

Collins has highlighted Kavanaugh's view of Roe as "settled law" to defend her support of the Supreme Court nominee, despite saying before his nomination she would not vote for a nominee who is "hostile" toward Roe. "I think you should care what's in that just as we should care what's in it". Kavanaugh is likely to push the conservative-leaning court further to the right, if confirmed.

The judge then stated that he believed that Roe is "important precedent" which has repeatedly been reaffirmed by the Supreme Court. That prospect worries Democrats and heartens Republicans on volatile issues including abortion, gun rights, gay rights, the death penalty, religious liberty and business regulation.

Republican leaders are trying to confirm Kavanaugh before the Supreme Court's next session begins October 1. Miranda said he may have shared stolen material with Kavanaugh, but never told him the material came from Democrats.

Abortion was another main focus throughout the hearing, with Democrats portraying Kavanaugh as a judge who might vote to undercut or overturn the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision establishing a constitutional right to abortion.

Despite an at times chaotic hearing last week, Kavanaugh is expected to be cleared out of the Judiciary Committee, where Republicans have a majority. They were released by the committee minutes later. Dianne Feinstein of California, said scheduling the hearing before the documents are ready "is not only unprecedented but a new low in Republican efforts to stack the courts".

But in a unusual twist, Republicans on the Judiciary Committee said that the George W. Bush library and the Justice Department had cleared several of the documents for public release the previous night, suggesting that Booker, in fact, was not risking anything by going public with the documents.
