Hurricane Florence takes aim at east coast

A number of tropical storms in the Atlantic Ocean, with the potential to strengthen to hurricanes, are heading towards land.

The tropical storm could begin to batter the southeastern United States by late on Wednesday, with Florence possibly making landfall around the Carolinas on Thursday or Friday.

Any small change to the storm's current track could affect its path and impact, though, and it's still early, James Murrow, National Weather Service Raleigh forecaster, said in a Sunday briefing.

The National Hurricane Center said Florence's maximum sustained winds early Saturday morning were estimated to be 60 miles per hour (95 kph).

The storm was expected to cause life-threatening surf and rip currents along the US east coast this weekend.

Improving atmospheric conditions were expected to allow Florence to regain its former strength.

Florence has sustained winds of 70 mph on Sunday morning and is located 765 miles southeast of Bermuda.

Forecasters said it was too soon to tell where the storm would go.

"The risk of direct impacts continues to increase", the center said in a key message posted on its website.

Forecasters said it is now around 1,500 miles east of the Windward Islands and is carrying winds of 65mph (100kph). Tropical storm force winds could be felt in Charlotte from this system.

Florence is forecast to move west Sunday, but then begin to turn west-northwest by Monday.

Unsafe hurricane expected to reach major storm status Monday.

Florence is forecast to rapidly strengthen to a major hurricane by Monday, and is expected to remain an extremely risky major hurricane through Thursday.
