Pelosi on NYT Op-Ed Author: I First Thought It Was Pence

Speaking to reporters onboard Air Force One on Friday, Trump said the column should be investigated as a national security matter and that he was weighing taking action against the news outlet.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, during a trip to India, told reporters "it's not mine", and denounced the Times for publishing the anonymous article that indicates Trump may be facing the prospect of revolt within his own administration.

Following the publication of a scathing op-ed from an anonymous senior Trump administration official, The New York Times refused to disclose any identifiable information about its source. "Mr. Trump may fear such honorable men, but we should revere them".

Trump and others blasted The New York Times after the newspaper ran what it said was a column written by someone within the president's administration who called into question his judgment and vowed to block some of his wishes.

Angrily. One of Mr Trump's tweets simply said "TREASON?".

James Dao, the op-ed editor for the Times, said in the paper's Daily podcast on Thursday, "There's nothing in the piece that strikes me as being relevant to or undermining the national security".

How is Michael Cohen's 'Truth Fund' faring?
He said that the payments had come from him personally, not from the campaign, but he had not known about them until "later on". Cohen said that Trump directed him to make the payments "for the principal objective of influencing the election ".

The author claims members of Trump's cabinet discussed invoking the Constitution's 25th Amendment but later decided against it. He said they are looking into action against the Times itself. This reportedly pleased the president, even though, as the Times noted, former Deputy FBI Director Mark Felt, who was the notorious Nixon-era Deep Throat, had publicly denied his secret identity at the time. "And I guess, if you get right down to it, it is up to me, but I don't want to do anything that's going to hurt us or potentially hurt us, because I have a feeling that the Republicans are going to do very well". Sessions "should be investigating who the author of that piece was because I really believe it's national security".

White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders separately called on the individual to resign.

A spokesman for Pence said the vice president "puts his name on his Op-Eds".

"But no one wanted to precipitate a constitutional crisis".

Trump said the book, written by US veteran investigative journalist Bob Woodward, "means nothing" and called it a "work of fiction".

The text of the op-ed was pulled apart for clues - the writer is identified as an "administration official" - does that mean a person who works outside the White House?
