Obama delivers rebuke to Trump at University of IL

Former president Barack Obama encouraged voters to hit the polls this November, saying during a speech at University of IL at Urbana-Champaign on Friday that "this moment in our country is too perilous for voters to sit out".

Trump meanwhile said he fell asleep during the former president's speech, and said Democrats would have caused a negative GDP growth.

"It shouldn't be Democratic or Republican to say we don't target certain groups of people based on what they look like or how they pray", he said.

The former president's remarks - which marked his full return to the political stage - came ahead of series of campaign stops to help fellow Democrats running in pivotal upcoming midterm races.

Reporters noted it was the first time Obama had name-checked Trump since leaving office, although he's spoken with implicit criticism of Trump several times over the past year-and-a-half. John McCain, Obama delivered a speech seen as a jab at Trump.

Speaking in North Dakota, Trump didn't have a substantial rebuttal to Obama's speech-only juvenile insults.

Breitbart.com contributor Joel B. Pollak not only attacked Obama in a September 7 critique of the speech, but also, the University of IL itself.

Twitter to permanently ban conspiracy theorist Alex Jones
Jones was complaining that Republicans aren't doing enough to go after an alleged purge of conservative voices by social media. You are a little gangster thug. "He's not answering", Jones said to Rubio. "I don't read your websites", Rubio told him.

And Obama went on from there, calling Trump out over "cozying up to Putin", for not standing up to "Nazi sympathizers", for attacking the press, for directing his own Justice Department to show political deference, and for costing us "honesty and decency and lawfulness in our government".

But on Friday, Obama offered his most pointed indictment of the political climate that has formed under the watch of Trump and the Republican-controlled Congress.

Obama criticized Trump during a speech Friday in IL, calling the current president "the symptom, not the cause" of division and polarization in the U.S.

"It's not conservative", Obama said.

Even as he has largely remained out of the spotlight, Obama made clear he's paid close attention to the steady stream of headlines chronicling the Trump administration and said the news is a reminder of what's at stake in the November midterm elections. "Over the past few decades, the politics of division, resentment and paranoia have unfortunately found a home in the Republican party". He added, America is supposed to "stand up to bullies, not follow them".

The speech marked Obama's strongest rebuke of Trump since he left office in January 2017.

On Thursday, the former president is scheduled to campaign in Cleveland for Richard Cordray's campaign for Ohio Governor.
