Manafort Trial Juror Says Single Juror Prevented a Full Conviction

Manafort Trial Juror Says Single Juror Prevented a Full Conviction

"And so what Paul Manafort is looking for is a walk-away deal, someone that will give him a chance to walk away without further jail time".

On Monday morning, Trump tweeted that Mueller's investigators "are enjoying ruining people's lives and REFUSE to look at the real corruption on the Democrat side - the lies, the firings, the deleted Emails and soooo much more!". There, she said she "did not want Paul Manafort to be guilty", but called the evidence "overwhelming".

"We sat him down and said you're not considering these other pardons with anybody involved in the investigation".

He pointed out that the charges in Manafort's case did not involve Mueller's core mission of investigating Russian interference in the 2016 election and whether any Americans conspired with those efforts. That probe is a "witch hunt", she told Fox News, echoing a favored Trump phrase. The president said the campaign charges against Cohen were flimsy, but because he had committed other infractions unrelated to Trump, he had reason to lie.

Duncan, a self-described Trump supporter who was photographed for the Fox report in a red "Make America Great Again" hat, said she and 10 other jurors were prepared to find Manafort guilty of each count in the indictment. He was found guilty of five tax fraud charges, one charge of hiding foreign bank accounts and two counts of bank fraud.

Prosecutors alleged Manafort hid tens of millions of dollars in income in secret bank accounts and shell companies around the world, money he earned from pro-Russia Ukrainian oligarchs.

That included three of the counts accusing him of failing to report foreign bank accounts in years 2011, 2013 and 2014.

"This clearly is crossing the line if it, in fact, happened", Manafort's defense attorney Richard Westling told the judge the first time the lawyers discussed the juror issue. I mean, he was right. Yet, she voted to convict Manafort. Any attempt by the president to pardon Mr. Manafort or interfere in the investigation into his campaign would be a gross abuse of power and require immediate action by Congress.

The conviction, analysts say, might increase the pressure on Manafort to cooperate with Mueller in hopes of getting a sentencing break.

Moscow has denied interfering in the 2016 election and Trump has said there was no collusion. Manafort refused to cooperate with Mueller investigators seeking his information about the Trump campaign and instead took his chances at trial.

A new poll of registered voters published by Fox News shows approval of special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation of Russian intervention in the 2016 US presidential election is at 59%, up 11 points from July.

A spokesman for the special counsel's office and a spokesman for Manafort did not immediately return messages seeking comment.

Paula Duncan, the first juror to speak out, said the four days of deliberation were often tense, sometimes resulting in tears. Manafort's lawyers repeatedly suggested their client might not have known the law. When it was all over, the government lawyers shook hands with all the defense lawyers, kind of like a baseball game, but a really somber one.

Around 11 a.m. of the panel's fourth day of deliberations, a note with a question came from the jury foreman. "We did due diligence", Duncan said. It also appears jurors nearly convicted Manafort on two additional charges, for foreign banking violations in 2013 and 2014.

Bank fraud ($3.4 million loan).

Manafort worked to help elect the former Kremlin-aligned president of Ukraine, Viktor Yanukovych.

Manafort's attorneys called no witnesses, arguing prosecutors failed to meet their burden of proof.

Manafort is set to go on trial in a separate federal case in September in Washington, D.C. He has also been charged with conspiracy and failing to register as a foreign agent in that case.
