West Nile fever grips Southern and Central Europe

Health officials say the best ways to prevent West Nile are: using insect repellents containing DEET, emptying standing water from containers around your home, wearing long sleeves and trousers from dusk to dawn when mosquitoes are most active and repairing damaged screens on windows and doors.

A third human case of a West Nile virus infection has been documented in Panama City Beach, increasing the concern for transmission.

"To date, there have no human cases reported, no positive mosquito pools identified, and no positives identified by Canadian Blood Services through their screening program", the media release said.

While West Nile can infect people of all ages, people over the age of 50 are at higher risk for severe infection. However, some people may have no symptoms at all.

The Romanians are advised to avoid exposure to mosquitoes, to wear long-sleeved clothing and long trousers and to prevent mosquitoes from accessing the house.

Apply Insect Repellent when Outdoors. According to Rider, we haven't had this type of mosquito in years, but with the rise of Zika in South America, they wanted to make sure we don't start seeing them again.

More infected birds have been found in the state so far this year; last year at this time there had been 172.

Everyone can help with limiting the number of mosquitoes by keeping areas around homes less conducive for their reproduction.

Once in water - as little as a spoon's worth - mosquitos will go from larvae to a biting menace in a mere three days. They say mosquitoes remain active even during the fall months. Empty any unused flowerpots and wading pools, and change the water in birdbaths frequently.

-Repair: Keep mosquitoes outside. Wear long-sleeved shirts and long trousers. Use as directed and consult a physician before using repellents on infants.

However, the organisation has insisted there is little risk to public health. In rare cases West Nile may cause encephalitis, or inflammation of the brain.
