The feature will be officially removed from Twitch Prime for new members starting on September 14, though existing subscribers will still be able to enjoy ad-free game streams through October 15. Prime subscribers will also continue to enjoy ad-free on some channels, as Twitch explains: "Twitch Prime subscribers can still get channel-specific ad-free viewing as part of Prime by using your monthly subscription token on a channel that has ad-free viewing for subscribers turned on". After that, folks who want to watch their favorite streamers without ads can do so by subscribing to individual channels (Twitch Prime gives you one free channel subscription per month), or by paying a separate $8.99 per month for Twitch's Turbo service.

On Monday, Twitch said it will drop its "universal ad-free viewing" experience on the Prime program starting on September 14. For years, Amazon US offered Prime customers a blanket 20% off on game pre-orders.

Twitch said it dropped the ad-free viewing experience to generate more money, but not necessarily for itself or for company parent, Amazon. As you might expect a lot of people are unhappy, especially console owners who do not benefit from the free games given away by Twitch as they are all for PC.

The decision to discontinue the discount entirely will likely be unpopular, as no other retailer in Canada offers a similar incentive with pre-orders. It now offers a $10 store credit bonus on select games under the more general (and free) My Best Buy rewards program. It was a good deal, because games don't tend to go on sale or get discounts for several months after release. Luckily though, Amazon is once again following Best Buy's lead and will begin offering a $10 promo credit with the purchase of select video games beginning August 28. Those with Amazon Prime accounts automatically get access to Twitch Prime benefits. With ads, the platform and game creators can get a cut.
