Trump sets goal to create U.S. military Space Force by 2020

"Next February in the president's budget we will call on the Congress to marshal the resources we need to stand up the Space Force".

On Thursday, Pence called for the establishment of a Space Force by 2020 and noted the Department of Defense would be taking to steps to reform the military's approach to space.

As part of the recommendation, a Space Development Agency would be created to create technologies for the new division.

"China and Russian Federation have been conducting highly sophisticated on-orbit activities that could enable them to maneuver their satellites into close proximity of ours, posing unprecedented new dangers to our space systems", he said.

The idea of a Space Force was first brought before Congress in 2017, said ABC.

"As their actions make clear, our adversaries have transformed space into a warfighting domain already, and the United States will not shrink from this challenge", Pence said.

But others in Congress - and apparently some high-ranking military officials - have, like Kelly, questioned and pushed back on the idea of a Space Force.

Stressing the need for a special space force, Pence said both China and Russian Federation were actively looking for technologies that could interfere with or disable U.S. space-based systems.

Before Trump's announcement in June that he wanted a Space Force, Mattis and Air Force Secretary Heather Wilson had cautioned against creating new Pentagon bureaucracy to address space issues.

The reality: You can get the visions of humans fighting in space right out of your head-what's being proposed is an Earth-based group to protect American satellites.

Mattis had previously opposed the creation of a separate military branch focused on space, writing to Rep. Mike Turner of OH in July of 2017 that he did "not wish to add a separate service that would likely present a narrower and even parochial approach to space operations".

These new organizations are part of a broad move to restructure the way the USA military manages its space operations and technologies.

Donald Trump's administration faces all sorts of political and logistical difficulties if it is to realise the creation of a Space Force by 2020, but the US President's re-election team is already thinking about the merchandise.

In a nod to the Air Force's current role, the Pentagon report recommended that the Space Command be led initially by the commander of Air Force Space Command, who would be dual-hatted. One of the designs is clearly based on the current logo of NASA, the civilian U.S. space agency.

Anyway, we'll get more details on what the Space Force actually entails in coming days.

This might require legislative support because Congress sets a limit on the number of assistant secretaries of defense. "But it's being handled by U.S. Air Force today". Even Defense Secretary James Mattis, who was appointed by Trump himself, is reportedly opposed to the notion.

What did Mike Pence say about the Space Force? It also oversees Air Force cyberwarfare.

US Vice President Mike Pence announced plans for the creation of a Space Force as the sixth branch of the US military on Thursday. Senator Bernie Sanders said via Twitter "maybe, just maybe" the government should guarantee healthcare "before we start spending billions to militarize outer space".

"We have to be able to compete, to deter, and to win", said Defense Secretary Jim Mattis while introducing Pence at the Pentagon on August 9.
