South Korea: North Korean coal entered its ports illegally

South Korea: North Korean coal entered its ports illegally

South Korea said a total of 35,000 tons of North Korean coal and pig iron worth $5.8 million illegally entered its ports past year, in possible violations of United Nations sanctions.

But there was no financial transaction made, which would constitute another violation of the United Nations sanctions, as the companies took coal in return for mediating trade between North Korea and Russia, Roh said.

North Korea believes the U.S.is "making baseless allegations against us and making desperate attempts at intensifying the global sanctions". But North Korea also indicated it is growing exhausted of the U.S.'s increasing pressure for full denuclearization.

The comments come less than two months after Trump met in Singapore with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, after which the president proclaimed a historic breakthrough in relations.

According to the website, the plan has been rejected by North Korean negotiators multiple times over the past two months.

Wrapping up the 10-month investigation, the Korea Customs Service said that the three local companies brought in a total of 35,038 tons of coal and pig iron from North Korea, worth 6.6 billion won ($5.8 million), in seven separate cases from April to October a year ago. Despite burgeoning diplomatic efforts to disarm North Korea, the global community has maintained maximum pressure on the North. It is also a breach of the United Nations resolutions, which ban exports of coal and other minerals from the North to cut off an important source of foreign currency that Pyongyang needs to fund its nuclear weapons and missiles programs.

South Korea started looking into allegations of North Korean coal imports back in October and the government was criticized over how long it was taking to investigate.

She has spent a grand total of 322 days in space including a stint commanding the space station and performing seven spacewalks. NASA's last space shuttle mission, the STS-135 flight coincidently commanded by Boeing's Ferguson, flew in July 2011.

Earlier in the day, the North's official Rodong Sinmun newspaper insisted the first step towards peace should be formally ending the 1950-53 Korean War, but Washington has maintained that Pyongyang must denuclearize before securing either a peace treaty or sanctions relief.

North Korea has in the past expressed anger over comments made by administration officials in the media, especially Bolton.

North Korea on Friday accused UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres of making "reckless remarks" and toeing the USA line when he called for verifiable and irreversible denuclearization of the Korean peninsula.

USA officials have declined to comment on a report on the Vox news website Wednesday saying that North Korea had repeatedly rejected a US proposal for it to cut its nuclear arsenal by 60 to 70 percent within six to eight months.

White House officials told Fox News the latest development is simply part of the work required to finalize the denuclearization agreement.

"We remain unchanged in our will to uphold the intentions of the top leaders of (North Korea) and the United States and to build trust and implement in good faith the (Trump-Kim) joint statement step by step", it said.

However, the statement offered the US a way forward if it responds sincerely "even at this belated time".
