Trump Administration Proposes Freezing Obama-Era Vehicle Fuel Economy Requirements

Advocacy groups display silhouettes of children meant to represent Americans hurt by air pollution at a protest of the administration's proposal to freeze fuel efficiency standards outside the EPA in Washington, Aug. 2, 2018. The 54 mile per gallon rule might sound high, but when automakers factor in government credits and other loop holes, experts said that the average will be closer to 36 miles per gallon. It called its plan a "50-state fuel economy and tailpipe carbon dioxide emissions standard for passenger cars and light trucks". But any plans to freeze clean air rules and strip California of its power to set its own rules is drawing fire from members of both parties.

General Motors said in a statement that it wants to work "with all parties to achieve one national 50-state program", adding that it was committed to "continually improving fuel economy and our commitment to an all-electric future".

The auto industry, which has often baulked at the higher costs associated with the tougher United States standards, strongly backs a national standard that could be negotiated between Washington and California.

The state coalition, led by California Attorney General Xavier Becerra, includes legal representatives from jurisdictions that have adopted California's more stringent vehicle emissions standards. Those losses would hit the estimated 200,000 U.S.jobs that deal with making vehicles more fuel efficient, said Simon Mui of the Natural Resources Defense Council.

The Obama-era rules also drove auto prices higher, since prior estimates fell short of what incremental improvements to fuel efficiency actually cost.

"For an administration that is happy to let states set their own rules when it comes to weakening environmental protection, it's the height of hypocrisy to deny California and a dozen other states their right to protect their people from global warming", Becker said in a statement.

The administration argues its proposal will reduce traffic fatalities by keeping the cost of vehicles down compared with the current emissions standards, which it claims are a safety hazard that "restrict the American people from being able to afford newer vehicles with more advanced safety features, better fuel economy, and associated environmental benefits".

In the years before California's extremely strict clean air rules, there were smog-filled skies that were fairly common.

GOP voters still loyal to Trump after controversial Putin meeting
He asked his interviewer, " Say that again , did I hear you?" However, Trump sent out a tweet last night saying the following. The Post-ABC poll was conducted by landlines and cellphones from July 18 to 20 among a random national sample of 464 adults.

According to Trump administration estimates, the Obama fuel efficiency standards would raise the price of vehicles by an average of $2,340.

The Trump administration proposal could also invalidate California's mandate that automakers sell a certain number of electric vehicles.

Democratic lawmakers and environmental groups argue the move will harm the environment, however. He cautions that as the EPA provides more information about its new proposed standard, those calculations may change.

"This has to be absolutely one of the most harmful and dumbest actions that the EPA has taken", said Healey of MA, one of the attorneys general from 19 states and the District of Columbia objecting to the change.

At the same time, it plans to block California from putting its own mileage standards into place.

The difference between the two standards could amount to several hundred dollars a year in increased fuel expenditures for the typical motorist.

The Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Transportation said the increase in emission standards for cars built from 2021 to 2026 would hurt auto sales and improve safety of motorists across the country.
