They also sought a restraining order, arguing the 3-D guns would be a safety risk.

On Monday, several states-including Washington, New York, and Massachusetts-filed a lawsuit against Defense Distributed, a nonprofit from Texas native Cody Wilson that plans on uploading a whole library of 3D-printed gun designs on August 1.

The suit, filed on Monday (Tuesday NZ Time) in Seattle, asked a judge to block the federal government's late-June settlement with Defense Distributed, which allowed the company to make the plans available online.

On Tuesday, before the court decision, the States Department Spokeswoman said, it'll be a hot topic.

President Donald Trump said that he is looking into the situation.

"By prohibiting those plans from going on to the Internet, you are not stopping criminals from getting their hands on guns", said David Amad, vice president of the gun rights group Open Carry Texas.

They are often called "ghost guns" because it's possible for people to make their own firearm without the serial number which allows cops to trace them.

"The age of the downloadable gun begins", Defense Distributed stated on its site after its settlement with the State Department.

Jacksonville Sheriff Mike Williams says making a 3D printed gun is illegal.

"Two federal courts agreed with the federal government and the U.S. Supreme Court declined to review the case, instead of continuing to defend the lawsuit that they were winning at every stage... the Trump administration abruptly reversed course", Ferguson said on Monday.

Last month the Trump administration settled a 2015 lawsuit brought by Defense Distributed, a company led by gun rights activist Cody Wilson, after the U.S. State Department forced it to remove materials related to the printable guns from its website under munitions export control laws.

The NRA said in a statement that "anti-gun politicians" and some members of the news media wrongly claim that 3D printing technology "will allow for the production and widespread proliferation of undetectable plastic firearms". "Because of Attorney General Ferguson's lawsuit, a federal judge has put this administration's unsafe plan on hold and has taken a responsible step to protect law enforcement, public safety, and our national security".

Attempts to post 3-D gun blue prints online have been blocked by a judge in Washington. "Already spoke to NRA, doesn't seem to make much sense!". Under the settlement, the Trump administration will allow downloadable guns for unlimited public distribution in any form.

A 1988 federal law - drafted with NRA support - barred the manufacture, sale or possession of an undetectable firearm.

Lawmakers say that the 3D printable guns are unsafe because they are unregistered and can be undetectable by metal detectors because they are made from plastic.

The gun's components can be made with a printer that uses plastic instead of ink.

Concerned Washington leaders say it would allow anyone to create a gun with a 3D printer.

An attorney for Defense Distributors told The Associated Press he doesn't know how many blueprints have been downloaded in the intervening days, but some news outlets say the online manuals have been downloaded thousands of times and posted elsewhere online.
