Santa Barbara Raises Stakes For Straws With Jail Time

In the past month, a wave of corporations have jumped on the straw bans, with McDonald's, Starbucks and American Airlines all announcing that they will stop providing plastic straws.

The momentum behind the movement to ban plastic straws in cities across the country doesn't seem likely to slow any time soon, especially in California.

San Francisco's board of supervisors not only voted to ban plastic straws but also takeout containers treated with fluorinated chemicals. Jail time and fines are not proposed for anyone who uses a plastic straw or provides one to a customer. "But the second time a purveyor of plastic straws defies the ban is when the heavy hand of the law could clamp down", writes Fox News.

Cities and businesses across the USA are moving to ban plastic straws in an effort to ease the burden of plastic waste on the environment.

Parker joins hometown Bulls, with Bucks' help
It came mere minutes after the Milwaukee Bucks rescinded their qualifying offer to Parker, making him an unrestricted free agent. The Bulls had made two earlier moves, trading Jerian Grant and Julyan Stone in order to free up even more cap space.

While first violations would result in a warning, intentional flouting of the new rule could land business owners with a misdemeanor, which means a fine of up to $1,000 plus the possibility of up to six months in prison.

The Santa Barbara straw ban comes into effect at 2.01am on January 1, 2019. An Assembly bill would require dine-in restaurants provide single-use plastic straws only upon request. Disney eliminating plastic drinking straws may cause a bit more blowback, but the company is focused on being cleaner and more environmentally friendly.

While other bans-like the one that Seattle recently passed-have included dispensations for consumers with disabilities, the present text of the Santa Barbara ordonnance contains no such exception. Unfortunately, more cities - San Francisco being the latest - seem determined to follow suit. Bye bye plastic straws. The loss of plastic bags, plastic bottles, and stirrers is something that most people will be able to get around and learn how to adjust. The company also said they will reduce the number of single-use plastic shopping bags in owned and operated parks and on cruise ships, offering guests the option to purchase reusable bags.
