Cohen's recording of Trump is a warning sign

"This is a very surprising tweet from the president this morning where he suggests his former lawyer, Michael Cohen, committed a crime".

An attorney for President Donald Trump's former lawyer says "any attempt at spin can not change what is on" a recording of Trump discussing a potential payment for a former Playboy model's account of having an affair with him years ago. The Wall Street Journal reported subsequently that the conversation took place in person.

Trump insisted on his innocence in Saturday's tweet, assuring his followers that "the good news is that your favorite President did nothing wrong!".

Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani says the payment was never made.

"The significance of this tape is that it may indicate there was criminal conduct by either President Trump or Michael Cohen or both of them", Specter explained.

Trump was responding to the revelation that former attorney Michael Cohen, weeks before the 2016 election, secretly recorded their discussion of a potential payment for a former Playboy model's account of having an affair with Trump. Over the years, Cohen, in his dealings on Trump's behalf with journalists, opposing lawyers and business adversaries, frequently taped his conversations, unbeknown to the people with whom he was speaking.

"Nothing in that conversation suggests he had any knowledge of it in advance", Giuliani said.

NY law allows one party to a conversation to tape it without the other knowing. The source with knowledge also said Cohen's recording of the tape was not illegal, as NY is a one-party consent state for recordings.

Trump's lawyers asking to remove the privilege designation from the recording means that the government now has access to it as part of the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York's probe into Cohen.

Kerber played as cleanly as can be, covering the court well and picking her spots for big shots as she cruised through the first set.

Mr Cohen once famously vowed he would take a bullet for Mr Trump, but he told ABC News this month that his loyalty to his family and country came before his old boss.

"But suffice it to say that when the recording is heard, it will not hurt Mr. Cohen".

Ms McDougal says she had a 10-month affair with Mr Trump in 2006, a year after he Wednesday Melania Trump. "Any attempt at spin cannot change what is on the tape".

Mitchell Epner, an attorney at Rottenberg Lipman Rich who was previously an assistant U.S. attorney for the District of New Jersey, told Business Insider that Cohen could have made the recording either "for his own protection" or to ensure he got repaid for an expenditure he thought could have been agreed to in the conversation.

She says the $150,000 (£115,000) agreement gave the tabloid exclusive story rights and banned her from talking publicly about the alleged affair.

"It's pretty clear from the tape, it's the first time Trump is finding out".

The matter is a potential problem for Mr Trump because undisclosed payments to bury embarrassing stories about a political candidate can be treated as a violation of USA campaign finance laws.

"We have no knowledge of any of this", she said. McDougal, 47, alleges that she had a 10-month romantic affair with Trump in 2006.
