Syrian Regime Captures Strategic Hill Overlooking Golan Heights

Nawa, in which at least 100,000 people still live, was the largest urban centre left in rebel hands in Deraa province, where the offensive launched last month has defeated rebels across a swathe of territory near Jordan and Israel.

"Syrian regime forces captured the town of al-Hara, as well as Samlin, Al-Tiha and Zimrin", said Syrian Observatory for Human Rights chief Rami Abdel Rahman.

A string of towns - Al-Hara, Samlin, and Zimrin - had agreed to fall back into regime control, while troops overran Al-Tiha militarily.

State news agency SANA said it had information on a deal for the army to return to its pre-2011 positions in the area, but did not provide more details.

Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, a group led by Syria's former Al-Qaeda affiliate, is present in that area, he said.

An AFP photographer there saw a plume of smoke emerging from the sloping hilltop overlooking agricultural plains on Monday.

Rebels in Nawa, where tens of thousands of people live, are in talks with Russian Federation for a potential handover deal too, according to the Observatory.

Rebels had agreed to a "reconciliation" deal with the government on Wednesday under which they would give up the hills around the city and surrender heavy weaponry, a statement from Nawa's negotiation delegation said.

Separately, some 7,000 civilians were expected to be evacuated from two pro-government villages in northwestern Syria as part of a negotiated deal with insurgents who have besieged them for three years. Israel does not want its enemies Iran and Hezbollah, both allies of Syrian President Bashar al Assad, who are well entrenched in that area, to move forces near its border.

Over the last few months, tensions have escalated between Israel and Gaza, after thousands of Palestinians demonstrated at the Gaza's borders demanding the right of return, lifting the blockade imposed by Israel after Hamas seized power of Gaza in 2007, and protesting the relocation of the U.S. embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, the holy city they consider the capital of their future independent state.

The army offensive aims at completing its control of the strategic area known as the "Triangle of Death", which connects southern the Damascus countryside with Deraa and Quneitra provinces.

They then began intensely bombing rebels in Quneitra, a crescent-shaped province wedged between Daraa and the buffer zone with the Israel-occupied Golan to the west. A live broadcast on Facebook from a Syrian state television reporter showed buses on what he said was the outskirts of Deraa city, accompanied by Russian military police and Syrian Arab Red Crescent vehicles.

The weekend's violence came after months of near-weekly border demonstrations organized by Hamas aimed in part at protesting the Israeli-Egyptian blockade of Gaza. The purported deal would see Russian Federation restrict Iran's presence in Syria-or even evict Iran from Syria-to forestall an Israeli-Iranian war that Moscow surely does not want.

Israeli media reports cited Bennett, a Netanyahu rival with ambitions to be prime minister, urging the military to open fire on anyone launching the kites.
