Google finds friend in Trump amid European Union battle

Google finds friend in Trump amid European Union battle

The European Commission has fined Google five billion US dollars for anti-trust violations - the biggest fine given by European anti-trust regulators against a single firm.

European Union regulators announced on Wednesday it was hitting Google with a $5 billion fine for violating antitrust laws by bundling its apps, like Chrome and Google Play, with its Android operating system.

The Brussels regulator insisted the tech giant had used Android illegally to "cement its dominant position" in user searches.

It nearly doubles the €2.42b - about Dollars $2.8b - that the European Union levied against the company past year over promoting its own shopping comparison service at the top of its search results. "They truly have taken advantage of the USA, but not for long!" he tweeted.

President Trump has been calling on the European Union to renegotiate trade deals, which would be fair to both the US and other nation states. Google has already stopped paying OEMs and carriers in order to have Google search be the exclusive search offering on devices after the European Union started to dig into the issue back in 2014, so that's one thing off of Google's plate already.

Yesterday Google was hit with the whopping fine by the European Commission.

Ms. Vestager also ordered Google to halt anti-competitive practices in contractual deals with smartphone makers and telecoms providers within 90 days or face additional penalties of up to 5 per cent of parent Alphabet's average daily worldwide turnover.

Two former antitrust enforcers said it was unusual but not unheard of for officials to comment on decisions by enforcers in other jurisdictions.

We can offer phone makers the option of pre-loading a suite of popular Google apps (such as Search, Chrome, Play, Maps and Gmail), some of which generate revenue for us, and all of which help ensure the phone "just works", right out of the box.

Our case is about three types of restrictions that Google has imposed on Android device manufacturers and network operators to ensure that traffic on Android devices goes to the Google search engine, ' explains European Commissioner Margrethe Vestager of the Commission's findings. "A vibrant ecosystem, rapid innovation, and lower prices are classic hallmarks of robust competition", CEO Sundar Pichai has also suggested that the ruling will mean that Android will no longer be offered for free.

Levies are based on revenue in the market being probed and can't exceed 10 percent of a company's global annual revenue.
