Republicans hesitate to hold Trump accountable over Putin summit

Standing next to Russia's Vladimir Putin, President Donald Trump openly questioned his own intelligence agencies' conclusions that Moscow was to blame for meddling in the 2016 USA election to Trump's benefit and seemed to accept Putin's insistence that Russia's hands were clean.

While long-time Trump supporter Newt Gingrich, a former Republican Speaker of the House, called it Mr Trump's "most serious mistake".

Trump maintained Tuesday's summit with Putin went "even better" than his meeting with North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies.

Sergei Lavrov, the Russian foreign minister, said separately that the talks were "better than super" in comments reported by Russian news agencies.

He cheerfully returned the compliment, saying he hoped the United States would host an equally successful competition, and promised to give the ball to his 12-year-old son Barron.

Mueller's office has tried to serve summonses on the defendants demanding that they appear in court, but prosecutors say the Office of the Prosecutor General of Russian Federation declined to accept the summonses.

In January, the Australian leader said Mr. Trump's sweeping tax cuts combined with reforms in corporate regulation benefit the global economy.

The Senate's top Democrat is accusing President Donald Trump of a "shameful performance" at a news conference alongside Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Trump declined to endorse the U.S. government's assessment that Russian Federation interfered in the 2016 USA presidential election, instead publicly embracing Putin's "extremely strong and powerful" denial.

Congress almost unanimously passed a sanctions law a year ago targeting Moscow for election meddling and for its actions in Ukraine and Syria. In April, that law led the U.S. Treasury to impose major sanctions on Russian officials and oligarchs, in one of Washington's most aggressive moves to punish Moscow.

Ryu was able to increase her lead to two shots with a birdie on the same hole, but her tee shot on the 17th went into the water. But the malaise continued when Ko bogeyed the 7th and 8th to turn two over for her round and one under for the tournament.

Trump also said "we are doing everything in our power" to prevent election interference in 2018.

His initial refusal to condemn Putin and Russian Federation over the USA intelligence community's findings garnered harsh blowback from lawmakers, intelligence veterans, and even some of his own allies.

The CNN anchor said Trump was like "Rain Man" in the way he returns to the subject of Hillary Clinton's email server.

"Do you think we tried to collect compromising information on each and every single one of them?" He nodded along to some of Trump's remarks before they were translated, showcasing his fluency in English.

On Senate Square, male "pregnant Trumps" and women wearing pink gags railed against a Trump order reinstating what critics call a "global gag rule" that bans providing federal money to worldwide family-planning groups that perform abortions or provide information about them.

Not all Republicans were angry with the president's conduct in Helsinki.

"President Trump proved not only unable, but unwilling to stand up to Putin", McCain continued.

Putin, for his part, played the role of statesman, serving as a kind of emcee and parrying questions from the press by professing incredulity at the allegations of meddling, before making an astonishing offer of a "deal" with the president.

What did he say at the summit with Putin?

"The West's attempts to isolate Russian Federation failed", read the headline on a report on Monday's summit meeting in state-run newspaper Rossiisskaya Gazeta.

Trump's comments come after he demanded last week that North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies "reimburse" the United States for defence costs.
