Democrats vow to fight against President Trump’s pick for Supreme Court

"President Trump said he was going to put somebody on the court who was going to overturn Roe v. Wade and make abortion illegal and take away preexisting conditions and that's what he's got", Sen.

In accepting the nomination Monday night, Kavanaugh said, "My judicial philosophy is straightforward".

She said that with Kavanaugh's credentials, "it's very hard for anyone to tell me that he's not qualified for the job".

Donald Trump's nomination came from a short list of federal appeals court judges, who all staunch conservative credentials.

Congress, he wrote in The Minnesota Law Review, should pass a law that would temporarily protect the president from both civil suits and criminal prosecution.

Kavanaugh also ruled that there was no "right for unlawful immigrant minors in U.S. Government detention to obtain immediate abortion on demand", although he based his decision in part on the theory that the delay in obtaining an abortion didn't constitute an "undue burden" whereas his colleague Judge Karen LeCraft Henderson recognized the illegal immigrant had no right to abortion at all.

Supreme Court nominee Judge Brett Kavanaugh is seen in the East Room of the White House in Washington, U.S., July 9, 2018.

Given Kavanaugh's conservative bent, many Democrats are up in arms about the future of Obamacare should the judge be confirmed. But his supporters have cited his experience and wide range of legal opinions.

The millions of documents can be requested by Senate Democrats and would take time for the National Archives, the federal court system and other stake holders to compile, meaning a confirmation hearing before the Senate leaves for August recess would be unlikely.

The nominee's fate may rest with two Republican senators who back abortion rights, Susan Collins of ME and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska.

Some Republican senators had favored other options. "He keeps an open mind and sticks to the law", Mascott said.

Bernie Sanders on 2016 Election: ‘In Many Ways We Did Win’
If Ocasio-Cortez wins the general election in the heavily blue district, she would be the youngest woman ever elected to Congress. It wasn't that Crowley lost because he wasn't conservative enough, he lost, in part, because he wasn't progressive enough.

If Collins and Murkowski vote "no" and Democrats all vote "no", the nomination would be blocked. He added, "The country wants the President to be "one of us" who bears the same responsibilities of citizenship that all share". "That's not happening. A new Axios/SurveyMonkey poll of key states shows Dems would lose three of those red-state seats while picking up two GOP seats - still short of the majority".

Joe Donnelly of Indiana, Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota and Joe Manchin of West Virginia will be prime targets. Feinstein is the ranking Democrat on the Judiciary Committee. A majority of 51 votes is needed for a confirmation.

And so did the Senate's other two most endangered Democrats, Sens. She warned if he is confirmed, Roe vs. Wade would be overturned immediately.

It's likely to become the most turbulent confirmation fight for a Supreme Court justice in years, with Kavanaugh already being cast as a hero or villain.

At the top of that list is abortion.

Kennedy's replacement also could be more willing to allow states to carry out executions and could support undoing earlier court holdings in the areas of racial discrimination in housing and the workplace.

In the law review, Kavanaugh wrote, "Having seen first-hand how complex and hard that job is, I believe it is vital that the President be able to focus on his never-ending tasks with as few distractions as possible".

He wrote that his views were shaped by his work for independent counsel Kenneth Starr, when he helped write a report recommending grounds for the impeachment of President Bill Clinton, and his later service in the White House under President George W. Bush. He has written roughly 300 opinions as a judge, authored several law journal articles, regularly taught law school classes and spoken frequently in public.

Alabamians will be hearing a lot about Kavanaugh in the coming days. He also served as Bush's White House lawyer and staff secretary, helping Bush navigate legal issues after the 9/11 attack.

Trump defeated Clinton's wife, Hillary Clinton, in the 2016 presidential election and has disparaged both Clintons. While he has yet to reveal his sentiments on the 1973 Supreme Court decision that established a constitutional right to abortion access, he was involved with a dispute over whether a pregnant migrant woman who was being held by immigration authorities could receive an abortion in 2017, according to the Los Angeles Times. Brett's mother Martha Gamble served as a Maryland state Circuit Court Judge from 1995 to 2001.

"From what I know at this point, it appears President Trump has made an excellent choice in nominating Brett Kavanaugh", Aderholt, R-Haleyville, said in a statement. That's Republicans and Democrats alike.
