Socialist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Defeats Corporate Democrat in NY Primary

Tuesday night, Holtzman couldn't help but think of that moment as she watched Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez pull off an equally implausible victory. The 28-year-old Latina's win in the NY primary is being touted as one of the most shocking upsets in recent American political history.

Trevor Noah spent a goodish chunk of The Daily Show catching his viewers up on previous night's stunning upset in which 28 year-old political newcomer Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez beat out a 10-term Democratic congressman in a NY primary.

Ocasio-Cortez ran well to Crowley's left in the primary, and New York's 14 Congressional District, is one of the most heavily Democratic parts of the US.

In a statement, Crowley congratulated Ocasio-Cortez on her victory and said he looked forward to supporting her against Republican Anthony Pappas in November.

House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi said Mr Crowley had been an unwavering champion for America's working families for nearly two decades.

Ocasio-Cortez was relatively unknown before defeating Rep. Joe Crowley, who represented New York's 14th District for nearly two decades and was thought to be a shoo-in as the next House Speaker.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, likely to be representing New York's 14th Congressional District in January, wasted no time using a mass shooting in Annapolis, Maryland, to enter the national gun debate.

The friend who introduced them, Mina Vahedi (Wheelock'11, '14), says she mentioned Ocasio-Cortez's campaign to her political junkie cousin last summer, who replied, "She has no chance at all".

Ms Ocasio-Cortez posted on Twitter after Ms Gillibrand's endorsement that the NY senator "didn't even bother to talk to nor consider me before endorsing".

Russian Federation is now hosting the World Cup, and promised "unprecedented" security measures in all cities hosting the games. The incident took place on Ilinka Street, about 200 meters (650 feet) from Red Square and Moscow's famous GUM shopping arcade.

Some campaign pros say that as much as she won, they believe the incumbent, Rep. Joseph Crowley (D-N.Y.), managed to lose.

"I would support impeachment", she told CNN.

Ocasio-Cortez's appeal, Konst added, ran deeper than just her gender or racial identity.

I think there's a lot of different reasons, and we'll never really know exactly why.

The political novice, who describes herself as a socialist Democrat, had huge grassroots support. Sanders endorsed her, but didn't campaign for her. But to those who were paying attention to New York City's outer boroughs, the young liberal Latina's victory was not so shocking. "This is why we must come together".

Ocasio-Cortez got her first taste of professional politics while working for the late Senator Ted Kennedy on immigration casework and foreign affairs.

"I do remember with complete clarity. that she was an outstanding student", Lukes said.

Greer noted the big differences between Ocasio-Cortez's race and the gubernatorial primary, and said Cuomo's move to the left shows he recognizes the risk of a progressive insurgency, even if he won't admit it. It's real. She wrote it. It sounded like a insane idea, but she said yes because Crowley hadn't faced a primary opponent in 14 years. "People around the country, everywhere I go, are helping us elect more Democrats, progressives, women, people of color".

"The energy in the Democratic Party is self-avowed socialists, open borders", McConnell said in an interview with Politico on Wednesday.
