Bernie Sanders on 2016 Election: ‘In Many Ways We Did Win’

Bernie Sanders on 2016 Election: ‘In Many Ways We Did Win’

"And I think I was primarily compelled on moral grounds, because I can only imagine if 60 people were shot and killed in Ferguson, or if 60 people were shot in killed in the West Virginia teacher strikes", Ocasio-Cortez said, referring to civil rights and labor rights protests held in the United States in recent years.

History suggests that Trump's Republican Party, like the parties of virtually every first-term president dating back to Ronald Reagan in 1982, will suffer losses this fall. If Ocasio-Cortez wins the general election in the heavily blue district, she would be the youngest woman ever elected to Congress.

The way Ocasio-Cortez ran her campaign will change the Democratic Party at least as much as the policies at the heart of her candidacy. "They still don't think you'll vote", Patel said in a campaign video posted to Twitter, with the "they" being an anonymous cadre of establishment politicians.

Ocasio-Cortez will face Republican Anthony Pappas and Conservative Party candidate Elizabeth Perri in November.

"I'm an organiser in this community, and I knew living here and being here and seeing and organising with families here, that it was possible", a visibly shocked Ocasio-Cortez said in an interview at her victory party on Tuesday.

After graduating, she returned to the Bronx where she became a community organizer.

Crowley is chair of the House Democratic Caucus, the fourth-highest ranking position in Democratic leadership in that chamber of Congress.

At his concession speech, Mr Crowley played guitar, dedicating the song Born to Run by Bruce Springsteen to Ms Ocasio-Cortez.

"They made a choice in one district", Pelosi said. "She demonstrated once again what progressive grass-roots politics can do".

"I think that the ideological purity that some Bernie Sanders supporters want to implement in the Democratic Party is really a manifestation of privilege", Maxwell said.

During her appearance on MSNBC, she responded to a question by anchor Willie Geist about how the USA would pay for her progressive agenda-which includes Medicare for All, a universal jobs guarantee, and tuition-free university and trade school education for all Americans-by firmly reminding him that the federal government spent hundreds of billions of dollars just a few months ago when it passed the Republican Party's tax law.

Ocasio-Cortez defeated longtime Representative Joseph Crowley in the Democratic congressional primary in New York Tuesday night, winning 57.5 percent of the vote.

The upset win, which quickly spread across social media and caught the attention of the country, was seen as a major challenge to the Democratic political establishment, since Ocasio-Cortez ran a largely grassroots campaign and was outspent by an 18-1 margin, according to the Associated Press.

In fact she found little support from established Democrats.

And this is the dedication and the importance and value of making sure people had a representative that was coming from [inaudible], that was representing issues that most resonate with them. It wasn't that Crowley lost because he wasn't conservative enough, he lost, in part, because he wasn't progressive enough.

These races echoed the divide in the Democratic Party that was highlighted by the primary race between Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders, a breach which has only intensified since the 2016 election.

The daughter of a Puerto Rican mother and a Bronx-born father, Ocasio-Cortez earned a degree in economics and worldwide relations from Boston University but worked as a waitress and bartender after graduating in 2011 to supplement her mother's income as a house cleaner and bus driver, according to The Intercept.

The district has been represented by Democrats since 1993. Who's the new leader? "Personally, in the past year I've twice been in rooms where I knew everyone was a citizen - a passport office in Lower Manhattan and at jury duty in the Bronx - and most people appeared to be new Americans".
