England smash world record ODI score against Australia

Only once in the 56-year history of List A cricket - when Surrey scored 496 for 4 against Gloucestershire at The Oval in 2007 - has any side scored more.

England lead this five-match series against world champions Australia 2-0.

This was England's biggest win over Australia in the history of ODIs.

It proved to be a hugely expensive mistake as Bairstow continued the red-hot form which has seen him score four centuries in his last six innings.

England got off to a flying start with Jason Roy and Bairstow offering a sign of what was to come.

The pair combined perfectly here.

Those moments apart, this was one-way traffic.

Australian bowler Andrew Tye. "It's a case of following and watching the ball". Almost two-thirds of his runs were heaved through - or over - the leg side.

It seemed inevitable England would reach 500 but Hales and Morgan went in successive balls late on as Richardson got some belated reward and the run rate finally dropped.

The opening stand fetched 159 runs inside 20 overs and was broken with Roy's run out in his attempt to scamper for the second run.

Australia were never in the hunt once opener D'Arcy Short chipped a catch to Moeen Ali off the bowling of David Willey in the fourth over and Moeen removed Travis Head and Shaun Marsh.

But that target - that vast target - required endless risk-taking.

Moeen, who was dropped from the Test team after a hugely hard winter in Australia and New Zealand, has taken eight wickets in the first three games of the series, including three today.

Adil Rashid of England.

Former England skipper Paul Collingwood is the other cricketer to reach 5000 runs for his country in ODI cricket. England's spinners - a key point of difference between the sides in this series - finished with seven wickets between them. The debate will continue.

To break the record for the highest ODI score - and then obliterate the new record at the same ground 22 months later - is an extraordinary achievement. There was no doubt that Trent Bridge staff was asked to offer that kind of pitch and they had just followed the orders. "I know they are a really inexperienced attack and we just kept talking about what we could do and what we said we would do and trying to keep it calm and simple", Paine added.

There is, though, an inflationary aspect to boundaries. I mean they are young and we recognise that.

"There were some outstanding performances and we were relentless both with the bat and the ball", he said. Bowlers compete in much the same way a clay pigeon does when someone goes shooting. "These are the days when you are like a dad, not a headmaster".

There are a couple more caveats, too. "Their top three are brutal". On Australian grounds they may have gone to hand. After their Nottingham heroics, the batting line-up will be unchanged.
