Government - rebel peace talks break down

"The problem is that the Brexit process is inherently risky".

In a tense atmosphere where it was not clear which way the vote would go, the government secured its victory only after offering concessions to one of the leaders of a group of Conservative lawmakers who were threatening to vote against May.

The EU Withdrawal Bill returns to the House of Lords on Monday.

Some rebels say they will challenge her plans to leave the customs union again during votes on other bills, on trade and customs, in the coming weeks.

Theresa May's flagship Brexit legislation has once more been thrown into doubt, after a compromise created to keep Tory backbenchers on board was branded "unacceptable" by leading rebels.

"I voted on Tuesday to make sure that the sovereign institution of this nation, our Parliament, gets its full sovereign right to review our new relationship with the trading partners we will have in future".

"The alternative is that we have all got to sign up to a slavery clause now saying whatever the government does, when it comes to January, however potentially catastrophic it might be for my constituents, and my country, I'm signing in blood now that I will follow over the edge of the cliff".

She has since accused the government of "serious betrayal" by reneging on the promised compromise.

Mr Grieve said, despite being aware of the possible catastrophic consequences of his actions, he would pursue a vote against the Government's Brexit bill next week if concessions are not made before then. "And that, I can tell you, I am not prepared to do".

That's a solid turnaround for him since a CNN poll last November showed 35% approval of Trump's handling of North Korea. The president also said returning a military salute to a North Korean three-star general was being respectful.

"My intention is to support Dominic Grieve in the amendment that he put before the house, because that's what I publicly stated last Tuesday", he told Sky's Sophie Ridge on Sunday show.

The assurances resulted in putting down the potential rebellion, and saw May's Brexit amendments carry the day.

"I've had communications, conversations with ministers at all levels who are concerned about the direction of travel", he told the BBC.

Asked whether he thought more resignations were coming, Mr Lee said: "I honestly don't know".

She admitted there had been "a debate" about what a "meaningful" vote for Parliament meant: "I've listened carefully to the concerns, I've put an amendment down which I think balances this issue of the role of Parliament together with the need for us to ensure we don't overturn the decision of the British people".

Crucially, the motion will be unamendable, meaning that MPs can not insert a requirement for May to go back to the negotiating table, extend the Brexit transition or revoke the UK's withdrawal under Article 50.

Tom Tugendhat, Conservative chairman of the United Kingdom parliamentary foreign affairs select committee, said there would be a "new government" if Mrs May lost the so-called "meaningful vote" on the terms of withdrawal, due to take place in October.

While there may be "political consequences" from the vote promised under the amendment, "this particular approach does not tie the hands of the Government in the way that the original amendment that was proposed by Dominic Grieve and others did".
