Will America's Allies Turn On Trump at the G-7 Summit?

Will America's Allies Turn On Trump at the G-7 Summit?

Trump, citing national security concerns, has slapped stiff tariffs on Canada and the European Union, prompting retaliatory levies and setting off a trade war that leaders say ultimately will hurt businesses, workers and consumers around the globe. Although the Prime Minister was the first world leader to be a guest in Trump's White House in January 2017 when the pair were pictured holding hands, officials admitted that they were not especially close.

"Russia is focussed on other formats, apart from the G7", Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said in a brief statement reported by the government-controlled Sputnik news agency. The Crimea annexation in 2014 resulted in the leading world powers excluding Russian Federation from the club and becoming the G-7 again.

French President Emmanuel Macron on Thursday threatened to join other world leaders to issue a rare rebuke of the United States at a global summit here this weekend, drawing an immediate and sharp reply from President Trump.

Trump's statement was made just before he left: the United States president has been at odds with the G-7 countries over mounting import duties disagreements.

Canada's Trade Minister Francois Philippe Champagne was even more blunt, declaring: "What we are seeing is that the world economic order is under pressure, under attack". In a statement at the time the countries, which include the U.S., France, Canada, Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom and Japan, condemned Russia's actions as "illegal" and in "contravention of worldwide law".

In Ottawa, Macron and Trudeau offered an olive branch of sorts by offering Trump a modest measure of support in his historic meeting in Singapore with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

"G7 Sherpa and Deputy Assistant to the President for International Economic Affairs Everett Eissenstat will represent the United States for the remaining G7 sessions", White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said in a statement.

Donald Trump Responds to Roseanne Cancellation
However, Roseanne conceded that there was no defence for her inflammatory tweet and has offered an apology to Jarrett. Trump , who has been an ardent supporter of the show , is now weighing in on the matter on Twitter .

Trump will skip out on G-7 meetings about climate change, clean energy and ocean protection. "Didn't you guys burn down the White House?" he said, referring to the War of 1812.

Staffers working on the G-7 summit have reportedly started to joke that the meeting should be called the G6 plus one.

And he promised a "frank and direct discussion" with Trump in Canada.

Bob Corker (R-TN) introduced legislation Wednesday forbidding Trump to levy tariffs in the name of national security without congressional approval. Mexico tailored the list of retaliatory duties to hit states governed by senior Republicans, such as the bourbon produced in the home state of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, Ky. The fact is that the US-Canada trade is nearly equal, and if you count both goods and services, it is the US that runs the surplus. "But Russia should be in the meeting, should be a part of it". Angela Merkel, the German chancellor, has a frosty relationship with Trump.

Mexico said it would impose import duties on $3 billion worth of US products, including cheese, bourbon, pork and others, making good on its threats that it would retailiate for USA tariffs on steel and aluminum.

But the French leader quickly added that Trump can't expect credibility on that file while he undoes all the good work done to date on pushing Iran to abandon its pursuit of nuclear weapons.

However, in an interview this week Trudeau acknowledged the challenges to be expected during the summit as President Trump continues his hard-line stance.
