Google unceremoniously removes the tablet section from official Android website

Note that this isn't the end of Android on tablets; after all, Android is an open-source operating system and the most popular mobile platform in the world.

Google removed its Tablets category from its Android page earlier today. Tablets overall as a category hasn't seen much growth in the last couple of years. The search engine giant has apparently removed the tablet section from its Android website.

Google hinted at the killing of its tablet lineup back in December 2017 when the company announced that it would no longer sell the Pixel C tablet.

A full-fledged Google Photos PWA will ideally enable users to upload photos directly from Android apps and perhaps provide notifications for automated creations as well. Chrome OS also starts to make its way to tablets.

However, according to Android's senior vice president of platforms and ecosystems, Hiroshi Lockheimer, there's nothing more to the story.

Gmail's major redesign will be available to all in July
Among a whole host of new features, Google will also be changing the Gmail layout in the upcoming update. Meanwhile, those who have already transitioned to the new Gmail will no longer be able to opt out.

The three tablets now on sale on the official Android website are the Nvidia Shield Tablet K1, the Sony Xperia Z4, and the Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 8.0. The Tablets section went missing. Over the course of last eight years, the company pulled out several stops to ensure that its tablets gain traction. With Google's disinterest in Android slates, it's hard to see how partners like Samsung and Asus can keep making them.

Google has always struggled to compete against iOS in the tablet market and is likely to focus on Chrome OS in the future.

Although Google has not confirmed anything, the outlet believes it's time to say, "RIP Android tablets".

While the tablet form factor is unlikely to go away anytime soon, Android on tablets is not a paradigm likely to continue significantly longer. But tablets are unable to gain a foothold in the market due to the lack of decent technical support and a number of other shortcomings.
