WatchOS 5 Drops Apple Watch Series 0 Support

WatchOS 5 Drops Apple Watch Series 0 Support

Apple today announced watchOS 5, the latest version of its Apple Watch operating system. That's not because of design - the watch's looks haven't changed much since its debut.

watchOS 5 doesn't add sleep-tracking or any other advanced analysis, but it does catch Apple Watch up to Fitbits in a few key ways.

Apple's watchOS 5 now enables users to invite another Apple Watch wearer to compete in a seven-day Activity competition, earning points for closing Activity Rings, while receiving coaching notifications to help stay engaged and win the week.

watchOS 5 will be available this fall.

But another thing that's cool is that your Apple Watch will automatically detect when you start and end your workout.

But the most valuable additions are for runners. Developers and members of the public should exercise caution when installing the new beta, as initial watchOS releases have tended to be unstable and dramatic in battery drain before settling later in the testing cycle. For privacy reasons, you need to first set up specific users you want to receive Walkie-Talkie notifications from, according to Apple. When a user contacts a friend via watch-to-watch communications the recipient will feel a haptic vibration and hear a beep sound, instead of a phonecall.

Google and Facebook hit by GDPR complaints
And it can't pre-check a box and ask you to uncheck it if you want to opt out: everything has to be on an opt-in basis. Facebook, which owns Instagram and WhatsApp , said the company has been working to meet the requirements of GDPR.

One long-requested feature is finally coming in watchOS 5: Podcasts. That's a hurdle that kept the watch from being useful for listening to audio, and Apple just made it possible.

Apple has added support for a number of third-party music applications, too, and said the newest version of watchOS will get the Apple Podcasts app.

But that's not all, because you'll be able to add student ID cards to your Apple Watch, and you'll be able to use it anywhere you can use your card.

The University of Alabama was selected along with Duke, Temple University, Johns Hopkins University, The University of Oklahoma and Santa Clara University.

This feature allows Apple Watches running watchOS 5 to send short messages to each other. A simple wrist raise does the trick - just start talking.

Another new feature, Zero Sign On, lets users automatically log in to Apple TV apps if they're on the wireless network provided by their cable provider.
