Jerusalem soccer club seeks to change name to honor Trump

U.S. President Donald Trump's decision previous year to recognize disputed Jerusalem as Israel's capital and move the U.S. Embassy there further fueled Palestinian anger.

On the eve of the embassy move, which provoked Palestinian protests, the Israeli prime minister thanked Ivanka Trump and the rest of the USA delegation for making Israel's alliance with the United States stronger than ever.

The army said it was reinforcing its troops in the West Bank with several combat battalions and intelligence units in case of possible unrest there as well.

Since the 1990s, the fate of the city has been a core issue in USA -brokered talks on setting up a Palestinian state alongside Israel, with the Palestinians seeking east Jerusalem as a capital.

Palestinians want their own state with their capital in East Jerusalem which Israel captured from Jordan during the war in 1967.

Abbas, who for years had banked on the USA to persuade Israel to cede land for a Palestinian state, felt betrayed and halted contacts with the Trump administration.

The ambassador said staff at the Tel Aviv mission had just marked its last day as an embassy and some of them will turn up for work tomorrow at the Jerusalem embassy, which will host an opening ceremony later that day.

Israeli officials have speculated that more than 100,000 Gazans will attempt to breach the border with Israel.

In East-Jerusalem, Palestinians will follow the events closely.

Two demonstrations organized by Israeli-Arab Knesset members are scheduled to take place around the Old City in protest of the embassy opening, which have received police permits, Rosenfeld said. "We will pray for the boundless potential of the future of the US-Israel alliance, and we will pray for peace". Hundreds of thousands of Palestinians were driven out or fled homes in what is now Israel. The implication is that the protesters will be crossing a "border" and "entering" Israel illegally.

Israel says it is protecting a sovereign border and accuses Hamas of using the unrest to plan and carry out attacks.

Observers say there is concern that expanding Palestinian protests may lead to clashes with Israeli forces. No Israelis have been injured.

On December 16, 2017, Trump recognised Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, in a move that triggered new violence in the region.

"Ashrawi said on the eve of the 70th anniversary of the Palestinian Nakba ("catastrophe"), a grave historical injustice that continues today, the U.S. will officially relocate its embassy from Tel Aviv to occupied Jerusalem, reneging on longstanding American commitments and policies and violating the most basic requisites of justice and legality".
