Indian policeman killed in Budgam attack

A Jammu and Kashmir Police constable was killed allegedly by militants after he thwarted their attempt to take weapons from a guard post in Budgam.

"Militants appeared outside the Guard Post and held-up policeman Shamim Ahmad, who was unarmed and going to offer Friday prayers at a local mosque.Shamim was asked by militants to lead toward the Guard Post".

Police said the wounded policeman was immediately sent to hospital, but doctors declared him dead. One cop critically injured.

Later, Ahmad, who resided at Check Hanjan Yaripora in Kulgam district, succumbed to the injuries, added the spokesperson.

All arms and ammunition at the guard post are safe, the police said.

The police have registered a case, he said. Meanwhile, mobile Internet was suspended in the district after the incident.

Restrictions, under Section 144 of the CrPc, were imposed by authorities in five police station areas of the summer capital, the official said.

Soon after the attack, Indian troops and police cordoned off the area and launched a search operation to nab the attackers.
