Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson relish a pairing in The Players

Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson will be playing partners at the Players Championship for the first time in 17 years when the pair go head to head during the first two rounds of this year's contest.

Tiger Woods reacts to his shot on six during the final round of the Wells Fargo Championship golf tournament at Quail Hollow Club.

Many in and around the Mickelson and Woods camps, including the two men themselves, say the dynamic between them was never quite as frosty as it was made out to be during their prime.

"Well, 2015 was one of those special years where Jason hit the ball unbelievably well", Woods said at the Players Championship on Tuesday. We haven't been paired together in years. The two have played together 35 times on the PGA Tour, the last time in 2014. "Hopefully the three of us can kind of get things going and feed off each other and get ourselves in a great position for the weekend". "But I just think it would be something that would be really fun for us to do, and I think there would be a lot of interest in it if we just went straight to the final round". "I feel better", Woods said. Towards the beginning part where my back got bad, we started getting on the same side of the draw but not in the same groupings.

"I'll probably be on the couch in my hotel room watching that one in the afternoon", admitted Justin Thomas, who will be finished with his round on Thursday by the time Mickelson and Woods tee off at 1:52 p.m. ET.

"It was the most remarkable golf in the history of the game", Mickelson said Tuesday at TPC Sawgrass, where he will play with Woods and Rickie Fowler on Thursday and Friday. They have 122 TOUR wins between them. I enjoy either competing with him on the first or second day or if it's the last day.

Woods, who holds the record for most consecutive weeks (281) and total weeks (683) as world No.1, has no doubt 30-year-old Day can reclaim top spot. Woods, meanwhile, had spent a year overhauling his swing with Hank Haney and hadn't won a major since the 2002 U.S. Open.

Woods had the flawless responses to questions about Mickelson's challenge. It really did. You looked at it and you said: "'How am I going to beat this?' There was a stretch there of a number of years that it was so impressive that it was hard to imagine it was actually happening".

"I hit a few good drives down the middle".

When Woods and Mickelson go head-to-head this week, with Fowler rounding out the super-group, we'll all be a witness.

Rory McIlroy is also in Featured Group coverage, playing alongside three-time major victor Jordan Spieth and FedExCup champion Justin Thomas in the early part of the week.
