Wells Fargo Championship 2018: Jason Day Rallies for Win

Day won his 12 PGA Tour event of his career and second of the season Sunday at Quail Hollow Club, beating the field by two strokes at 12 under par and heading into next week's Players Championship driving as well as he did when he was the best golfer in the world and possibly putting even better.

Peter Uihlein, Phil Mickelson, and Rory McIlroy all showed early Saturday that it was a softer, gentler Quail Hollow under an overcast sky. He remained atop the leaderboard until midday through the round. Mickelson now has five top-5 finishes this season.

For McIlroy, though, it was a particularly disappointing final round after his third round 66 had moved him to the fringes of contention with what he'd termed a "half chance" bid at victory.

The victory sends Day back to world number seven.

Day did his part with five birdies on his last 10 holes and a daring shot on the 18th when he stood barefoot in the creek to play a shot onto the green. Woods shot 73 to finish at 2-over 144. He was at 10-under 203.

"I hit the ball halfway decent today, " he said. A birdie at the 10th got him to 12 under, but things almost turned disastrous a few holes later, when Day bogeyed the 13th and then badly hooked his drive into the water at the 14th.

When Woods finally came off the green at No. 18, he knew he'd blown some positioning for Sunday.

Australia's Jason Day, seeking his 12th career US PGA title and second of the year, fired a four-under par 67 to grab a two-shot lead after Saturday's (Sunday in Manila) third round of the Wells Fargo Championship. "I need to do a lot of work if I want to win next week". I felt like it handcuffed me", admitted McIlroy of his first impressions of Sawgrass, explaining: "I've learnt to take it for what it is, a very positional golf course. He was nine shots behind.

"I mean, I feel like it's on the end of my tips, it's right on the end of the tip", Day said this weekend describing how close he is to his No. 1 form. I just didn't hit good putts, and on top of that, the ones I did hit well, I didn't have enough speed on them. Fowler made a monstrous 75-footer for eagle at the par-5 7th, but he had two more double bogeys (including another one at the 17th).

But you may be wondering, as I did, where has Watney been over the last few years on the PGA Tour?

It is only two years since Day was dominating the game, but he slightly lost his way and surrendered the spotlight. It bounded over the stream to the other side. Two bogeys over the last three holes gave him a 70. "Didn't quite get the ball in position", Day said.

Day is in charge, but not in the clear. But the balky putter was too much to overcome.

DeChambeau followed his second-round 65 with a 66 to get to 7 under, and Casey bogeyed two of the first five holes before playing 4 under the rest of the way. McIlroy, meanwhile, was seven behind.
