New UK Home Secretary pledges 'fair and humane' immigration system

Sajid Javid's former parliamentary private secretary has said his "empathy" will help him when dealing with immigration.

Ms Rudd was replaced by former Communities Secretary Sajid Javid yesterday (Tuesday).

He voted Remain in the 2016 referendum on British membership of the European Union, and his appointment - announced by Prime Minister Theresa May in a tweet Monday morning - maintains the delicate and often uneasy balance between "remainers" and "Brexiters" in the government.

A spokesman for May was not immediately available for comment but a government official who spoke on condition of anonymity confirmed a BBC report that Home Secretary Amber Rudd had resigned.

"The Prime Minister tonight accepted the resignation of interior Minister", - said the representative of the head of government Theresa may.

She was forced to apologize for the Windrush scandal, named for a ship which carried immigrants from the Caribbean to Britain between the 1940s and the 1970s. "The real issue is the hostile environment policy that caused this crisis in the first place". It immediately impacted me.

He told MPs: "I want to start by making a pledge, a pledge to those from the Windrush generation who have been in this country for decades and yet have struggled to navigate through the immigration system".

"When I heard about the Windrush issue, I thought that could've been my mum, dad, uncle or me".

A tentative thaw began earlier this year with North Korean participation in the Winter Olympics in South Korea's Pyeongchang. The summit will conclude with the leaders signing an agreement and delivering a joint statement before dinner.

It follows the resignations of former defence secretary Sir Michael Fallon, Priti Patel as global development secretary, Damian Green as first minister and James Brokenshire, who left his role as Northern Ireland secretary on health grounds.

But Rudd now might join forces with other pro-EU Conservative lawmakers, further reducing May's strength in parliament, where she lost her party's majority at an ill-judged election a year ago.

She said: "When I was home secretary, yes, there were targets in terms of removing people from the country who were here illegally".

The letter, published by The Guardian newspaper, contradicts Rudd's earlier claims that her department had no such targets.

Now they are at risk of deportation, as they have no documents proving their status in the UK.

Rudd's resignation on Sunday evening came after weeks of scrutiny over her handling of a scandal centred on the treatment of immigrants of mostly Caribbean descent who arrived in the United Kingdom after World War II to address labour shortages.

In recent weeks, Rudd and May have apologised repeatedly to the Windrush generation, saying all pre-1973 Commonwealth immigrants who don't already have British citizenship will get it, and those affected will get compensation.

Tory MPs were widely sympathetic towards Ms Rudd in their remarks, while Labour deputy leader Tom Watson said Ms Rudd was 'carrying the can for the person originally responsible for this scandal, ' Mrs May.
