World's oldest known spider dies aged 43

The spider - known as "Number 16" - had been studied by researchers since 1974 in a pioneering Australian research project looking into trapdoor spiders.

The recent death of the 43-year-old trapdoor spider, not only breaks the record for the world's oldest spider, but also demonstrates that long-term research is essential to understand how different species live in the Australian environment.

"They enter the burrow and then lay an egg either in or on the spider". Although trapdoor spiders are found all around the world, the particular specimen was discovered in Australia during the first year of Barbara York Main's survey.

Scientists believe that studying the trapdoor spiders and their unique lifestyle will provide more insights into how these species will behave when global warming and climate change affects their habitat.

This picture taken on January 1, 2016 and released by Curtin University yesterday shows the world's oldest known spider which has died at the ripe old age of 43 after being monitored for years in Perth, Australia.

The average trapdoor spider can live from 5 to 20 years.

Number 16 probably didn't die of natural causes. They cleverly camouflage their trapdoor and lay out trip lines so that when an insect triggers it, they leap out in surprise attack, dragging their prey into their burrow.

That's because male trapdoor spiders die shortly after impregnating females with the sperm they carry around in their "little turkey baster" front appendages, which are called palps, Mason said. The researcher expressed grief about the demise of the creature and told the Telegraph she wanted to it complete at least 50. Female trapdoor spiders stay in and around the same burrow virtually all their lives, so researchers marked her burrow and went back to check on it regularly. Scientists have found out that the spiders Giaus Villosus live so long due to the special structure and a slow metabolism.
