Liam Fox accuses Lords of trying to block Brexit

The Lords' amendments to the European Union (Withdrawal) Bill can be overturned in the lower house, where May has a working majority with the support of a small Northern Irish party.

"The public voted in the referendum, they voted to leave the European Union, the House of Commons passed the legislation to allow that to happen".

Parliament will effectively has the power to stop the UK's exit from the union, as it can indefinitely force PM May back to negotiations with the EU, in addition to voting down a "hard Brexit" proposal.

Dr Fox, one of the most committed Brexiteers in Cabinet, was scathing about the Lords vote - one of three defeats on Monday night.

He told BBC Radio 4's Today programme: "We can't have a situation where the clearly expressed will of the people in a referendum is thwarted by effectively procedural devices that would keep us in the European Union indefinitely".

"Now we have the unelected house actually trying to block the democratic will of the British people", Fox told Sky News, adding: "This is a question about whether the will of the British people will be respected or not, and it must be".

ECB's Draghi says growth has moderated, outlook solid
This, in turn, could have ramifications for the ECB's sole policy objective of ensuring price growth returns to its near 2 percent target.

His comments come ahead of a crunch meeting of the Cabinet's Brexit sub-committee, which will decide on the UK's approach to future customs arrangements.

Fox said on Tuesday: "I don't think there is a customs union that could ever be acceptable".

He said: "If we were in a customs union with the European Union we would have to accept what the EU negotiated in terms of market access to the United Kingdom without the United Kingdom having a voice".

"I would urge the Prime Minister to accept this cross-party amendment and recognise that there is no majority in Parliament or the country for a no deal Brexit", he said.

Overnight, peers also voted for an amendment that would require parliamentary approval for the Brexit negotiating mandate in phase two of the talks - similar to the process where EU27 leaders approve the mandate of their chief negotiator, Michel Barnier.

Liam Fox said today that neither post-Brexit customs options to be presented to cabinet ministers tomorrow solve key red lines, amid hints that he would resign if his ability to strike trade deals were curtailed.
