Amazon launches new Alexa experiences for kids and parents

It also costs more than the standard Echo Dot, at $80, even if the hardware is nearly identical. So, again, instead of buying two things separately for $133 United States dollars, you get them together for $80.

Connectivity on the Echo Dot is made possible via A2DP (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile) Bluetooth support and dual-band Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n. Oh, and it also comes in blue, green or red cases. It also has a two-year warranty. This is a new content subscription service for parents and kids, which aims to bring a wide selection of Alexa-specific content, such as kid-friendly premium skills, a library of 300 kids audiobooks, games, and more.

FreeTime Unlimited costs $2.99 a month, but the device won't simply stop working when that free subscription runs its course.

Some of the parental controls include the ability to set time limits on device usage and block explicit songs, the option to turn off voice purchasing and the ability to review your kid's FreeTime on Alexa activity.

Since all Alexa devices in the house run on the same network, you can also use it as an intercom to call your kids down for dinner.

Additionally, the extended features on FreeTime Unlimited give parents greater access to their child's activity on the Alexa app.

Being a product aimed at little tykes, the Echo Dot Kids Edition is bound to take a tumble or two.

It all comes down to your comfort level with the products, and your desire to have another Alexa-enabled device in your home - a device geared specifically toward children. If it breaks, Amazon will replace it for free. Echoes with screens, such as the Echo Show or Spot, won't get the feature, however. Also, the kiddie version of Alexa won't allow the young ones to shop, make phone calls outside of the house, or hook up with third party apps such as Spotify or Lyft.

The $30 may be worth it though, especially if you plan to use FreeTime Unlimited which costs $36 coupled a year normally.

When will it be available?

Amazon FreeTime on Alexa, a free upgrade for existing Echo users.
