Alfie Evans taken off life support over parents' objections

Alfie Evans taken off life support over parents' objections

The demonstrators call themselves "Alfie's Army".

A "last-ditch appeal" in which the Italian ambassador granted Alfie citizenship of Italy in order to take him to Rome for treatment failed on Monday.

Last Wednesday, when Pope Francis chose to receive Alfie 's far at Vatican and expressed all his solidarity, he had already been showing in public his desire to agotasen all possibilities of keeping little one alive.

But his parents have fought a long battle to ask the courts to allow them to take him overseas. "Between 4 and 5 a.m. this morning, the hospital reluctantly gave in to continued requests and provided some hydration and oxygen support", the Christian Legal Centre explained.

This is the latest in a number of court battles between the parents and the hospital, which say it is in the child's best interests to withdraw life support as his brain condition, which has never been diagnosed, can not be treated.

"It's very disappointing", said Andrea Williams, chief executive of the Christian Legal Center, which is representing the Evans family.

However, he did ask Liverpool hospital Alder Hey to consider allowing Alfie to be taken home, the local daily reported. He is being denied that chance.

Justice Anthony Hayden of the U.K. High Court ruled against the option to take Evans to the Vatican's Gesu Bambino Pediatric Hospital, even as an Italian air ambulance stood by ready to transport the toddler, according to the Mirror. He has not been definitively diagnosed, but his doctors think he suffers from a rare and incurable degenerative neurological condition.

He rejected claims by Mr Evans, 21, that his son was "significantly better" than first thought because he had now been breathing unaided for 20 hours.

A spokeswoman for the Christian Legal Centre, which is assisting Tom Evans and Kate James, said they meant to ask the judge to consider allowing medical experts in Italy to examine Alfie.

During the meeting, the Queen made a remark about her preferred successor as the head of the Commonwealth . Elizabeth was born on 21 April, 1926, and became queen in 1952 at the age of 25.

However, in court proceedings, Alder Hey officials testified that they believe that Alfie's brain is "entirely beyond recovery" and 70 percent damaged.

And a late night court hearing heard by telephone by Mr Justice Hayden and lawyers for both sides confirmed his earlier decision permitting life support, helping Alfie to breathe, to be withdrawn. What does the United Kingdom lose if Alfie Evans gets on a plane? Instead, the judge said Alfie's continued life was a "shaft of light" and a "special opportunity" for his parents to spend time with him - not the time for more legal manoeuvres.

But summing up, the judge said there was no substance to the application.

Woolfe went on to say at the end of his video that the problem with the whole situation is the view that "the state has control of our bodies, not ourselves, not our parents, not our loved ones".

Parents Tom and Kate would like to take their son to a hospital in Italy, but the hospital has refused to comply with their wishes.

The case has drawn the attention of Pope Francis, who during a Sunday blessing in St. Peter's Square this month offered prayers for Alfie and others who are suffering from serious infirmities.

Francis has spoken repeatedly about Alfie. The pope has expressed support for the couple, and Alfie has been granted Italian citizenship in the hopes that it would free the family from the deadly grip of the British healthcare system.

At an audience last week, he told attendees in reference to the case: "I want to reiterate and strongly confirm that the only master of life, from the beginning to its natural end, is God, and our duty is to do everything to protect life". The center has issued a statement announcing that "out of respect for privacy of Alfie and his family", it will not provide more information about child's status.
