Romney must compete in primary for Senate seat

The 2012 Republican presidential candidate and former MA governor failed to win the Utah Republican Party's nomination, which means he must face 11 challengers in a June primary for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by retiring U.S. Sen.

If he had won the party delegate vote at the convention, he would have bypassed a primary altogether.

Romney was narrowly defeated at Saturday's Republican state convention, receiving 49 percent of the vote to state Representative Mike Kennedy 51 percent. Voters will decide between the two in a 26 June primary.

"So I'm not a cheap date", he said. "Frankly, given the fact that I collected signatures and the delegates don't like people who collect signatures, I'm delighted with the outcome", Romney said, according to the Desert News.

"The issue prompted hours of debate, shouting and booing at the convention".

Amid references to the Romney vs. Kennedy battle being akin to a David vs. Goliath, Romney had a good line: "First, none of us is David".

"I will make that decision down the road", Romney told CNN at the Utah GOP convention on Saturday.

The former MA governor was presumed to be the front-runner but failed to secure the nomination for Senate.

After the 2016 presidential election saw a groundswell of support for political outsiders on both sides with Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders' campaigns, it has not been easy for mainstream candidates to push through.

Trump fired back that Romney "choked like your pet dog" during their own WhiteHouse operate.

Trump, however, had endorsed Romney for Senate in February, despite a history of rivalry between them.

The convention also contended with Romney's well-known disdain for and criticism of President Trump.
