Local students walk out of classes to protest gun violence

More than 25 students walked out of class and off campus Friday to call attention to school violence, marching about a mile from La Porte High School to the La Porte County Courthouse.

The latest protests are planned for Friday, the 19th anniversary of the Columbine High School shooting that left 13 people dead in Littleton, Colorado.

Just like the March walk-outs, on the one-month anniversary of the Florida high school shooting, some of today's walk-outs were to protest for stronger gun laws. The gunmen later killed themselves.

"The reality is that school shootings are also interfering with our education, and we can't continue to live as a society that accepts it as a way of life", said Devin Bahr, a Churchill High School student.

The Columbine massacre haunted the nation, and remained the deadliest high school shooting in US history-until Parkland.

Students believe no one should feel the need to do that. "We had a moment of silence, a minute of silence, honoring the victims of thee Columbine shooting", said West High senior Zoe Brookshire-Risley.

The U.S., France and Britain condemned Assad's regime - as well as his allies Russian Federation and Iran - for the attack. It was not clear whether the presence of the investigators could affect the timing of any U.S. military action.

There have been at least two incidents of students being caught bringing a gun to a Tuscaloosa City school this year. "All Americans need to think about the issue as what side of history do they want to be on and how they want to be remembered", said Tomalin.

These students have participated in multiple walkouts and have been very supportive of other schools.

Ahmad said the turnout of about 250 was smaller than in the March walkout because many students didn't understand why another walkout was needed.

Organizers also provided letters addressed to state representatives available for people to sign at the conclusion of the walkout and encouraged their peers to write pieces of legislation that they would like to see enacted.

They tried to keep the protest going in another way.

Sutherland said she's fighting for a safer future that benefits everyone.
